Hi everyone,

my 2009 x type estate diesel auto is a great car, but I have a noise from the front that sounds just like a tyre flat spot. So replaced tyres but no different. Checked wheel bearings but all ok.

When wheels are straight ahead the noise is still there but when lock is applied it gets much worse. I`m starting to think it could be drive shaft joint problem. Anyone any iseas?

thanks

Hi Rod

Just a few ideas, Bushes / Alignment / Shock absorbers / steering rack mounts are you getting any feedback via the steering wheel? I don't know anything about X types, is that a front wheel drive or AWD

Hi -Steve yes sounds like a -U J-on a drive shaft to me could be dodgy if it breaks up

so I would get it checked as soon as possible.

swapped wheels front to rear but noise is still the same. Now going to check temperature of wheel bearings after a run to see if both sides of car are similar

I will let you know the outcome. I`m begining to think its a overheating wheel bearing. Cv joints are ok.

with your description it sounds like a wheel bearing, usually the opposite side when you turn into lock

Hi Gary,

Thanks for that. I will check temperatures of both front bearings and finish up replacing them.

I will let you know.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for that. Interesting video. All the things he mentioned in the video have been checked. Do you know if the front wheel bearings can be replaced on their own without replacing the complete hub, like the rears?

Thanks to everyone for your help. Replace front wheel bearings and noise has now gone. The nearside bearing where the noise seemed to be coming from was very rusty when we got it out. Front bearings come in a kit so you dont have to replace complete hub.

many thanks
