NEW OWNER BONNET MASCOT QUESTION

Good evening all! 

My name is David Lee, from sunny Lancashire!! 

Im a new owner to a Jaguar X Type 2.2 S Diesel automatic, I have a question which could turn into a job for someone who knows what they are doing  

 

the first one is, my car does not have a mascot on the bonnet, is it possible to fit one? Or does the bonnet need to be changed. If anyone could do this for me, I'm willing to pay and travel 😀. 

 

Second one, I don't have a sat nav fitted to mine just a standard Jag heater and radio / cd screen  is it possible to fit a sat nav head unit and it will work right away, or does the car need alterations

Hi David -Welcome to the club --We have had many people ask about the mascot in the past and they are quite easy

to get from E bay --many different prices ??-I paid £23  for my flip back one and was very pleased with it.

And was very easy to fit --If you look under the inside of your bonnet there is a hole in the inner skin as the guide???

Welcome to the forum.

The mascots or "leapers" as they are called, are very easy to fit, but you do need the courage to be able to drill the hole in the bonnet. You can buy them on e-bay or from Jaguar dealers, and you can even get gold plated ones. You must also make sure the one you intend to fit is of the spring loaded type to be legal. If you decide to fit it yourself there are various videos on u-tube showing exactly how its done.

As for the sat nav, I believe it is possible to fit the later unit incorporating the sat nav, but this is not a DIY job in the least. Also, I believe you will not be able to update it from when the X Type was discontinued, so it will always be out of date. I do not have sat nav on my 2003 2.1, but I have fitted a standard Garmin on the consul, connected to an additional, hidden lighter socket connected to the ignition, so it switches on automatically when I switch on the ignition.

Thankyou both for your replys! Very much appriciated. Unfortunately, I wouldn't have the bottle to do a DIY job and fit myself and risk messing it up, I would rather pay a man to do it! Ha.

I bought mine off e-bay and my mechanic fitted it in no time and i'm very happy with it . If my car wasn't booked in for another job i would have done it myself as it's very straight forward .

I bought one of those a few weeks ago, but other distractions have kept me from mounting it to date. Nice to know that JLR put a guide inside the bonnet to help alignment.

By the way: I call them pouncing pussies and have done since I fitted a gold plated one to my XJS in the 80's. It was stolen, of course, with significant damage to the bonnet.

Hi David,

In respect of a SatNav I would recommend you do what I have done. I had a Garmin Nuvi 2545 from my previous car. I got a stick on plate from Halfords to go in the centre of the dashboard.

Then the standard sucker mount for the Garmin Nuvi sits on this plate. I got Halfords to wire a Garmin charger unit into the fuse box for their standard £35 fee. The SatNav now sits in the centre of the dashboard and works perfectly. It is actually a better place for it than in the middle of the console.

This type of SatNav installation is future-proof since you can swap out one Garmin for a replacement unit with better features but still using the old power supply and lead. Thus I am thinking of replacing it with a Garmin DriveAssist unit which has a built in drive-cam. You can pair your phones with it too using bluetooth for hands-free operation. Halfords sell the Garmin DriveAssist sucker mount too so this is a simple swap for the Garmin Nuvi sucker.

Welcome to the Club, David.

You have already had some very good advice,

Fitting a leaper is not a difficult job, as other have said.

The sat nav is a bit  different. I know two people who use their iPhones, having fitted a small bracket on the air vents.  It works very well.  You cannot get map updates after 2012/13 on the Satav fitted on the X type and buying a TomTom or Garmin is a good option.
