That looks sad news even though that model was never available here in the UK; no doubt something to do with emissions etc???

My partner (still nursing bruises inflicted whilst looking at Jag Mk V adverts plus a Mk VIII available in South Africa!) remembers having the polar opposite of the Falcon range (most powerful 6-cylinder in-line engine).......least powerful 6-cylinder in-line ......early 1980s, whilst in Western/Central USA - a AMC (Rambler) Concorde with a 4-litre straight six that wouldn't pull your hat off. Switch on air con whilst climbing a long grade and even the bicycles were keeping up!

With no particular relevance, you may remember a 2007 film called "Atonement" with Keira Knightley and James McAvoy.......large parts filmed at Stokesay Court, Shropshire, not far from us...........here's some pics, you may, if film seen, remember the significance of the ornamental pond.

Significant other suggests the MkV would look good outside the entrance door.  Now if I could get him to sit on the edge of the pond................

Well now Laz, you are more than likely quite correct my friend although please remain mindful of my unspoken inference that my statement referred to motor car power plants since this site is in fact given over to motor cars generally and Jaguar models more specifically and as such would not intend to include the overwhelming range of engines various, fixed, power generation, for the use of.

Sorry, I didn't mean to appear facetious.

I'd be interested to see what direction Ford Australia's model line up takes from here. I believe the decision to kill off a brand name usually has its origins in the marketing department. The Ford Escort here in Britain was replaced by the Focus. A car which underneath the radical new styling was very similar in ethos and design to the mk6 Escort. "Escort" was a household name and I can't imagine the decision to move on was taken likely. However, that was nearly twenty years ago and I don't wonder if the Falcon replacement will be a genuine departure in not only marketing, but also technical terms.

In general the relatively lazy engine with the potential to cover quarter of million miles without being opened now appears to be eschewed in favour of an over-boosted, small capacity engine running close to it's limits under normal use. I don't see the dust-to-dust emissions improving, in fact I believe they will increase. I hope that this apparent trend does not continue with the Falcon's replacement.

 

 

Quietly I would take an XR8 or XR6T over an S-type R, the manual transmission swings it.

Prior to my Jaguar fascination a Gold duco-ed XR6T topped my wish-list. The six is as tractable as the 8 though rather more fuel efficient and as torquey which, I believe, is a result of the power pulses being delivered about a common axis whereas the  8 is not sure if perhaps it wants to be a boxer. The sequential 6 speed would be most fun to use and the driver retains control although the auto is very very clever and can assume much of the mental chore of achieving best practice. As for a replacement it would appear likely to be a X Type Front/Four wheel drive on a US model planform or Mondeo.
