Paddle shift

Hi all

I wanted a car for ages that had a paddle shift and now I have one I can honestly say I never use it. The issue is that being used to a 6 speed manual in the past I have no idea what gear you should use in the Jags 8 speed box given the speed of travel.

if anyone uses it regularly in manual paddle shift mode that can shed some light I would greatly appreciate it.

Funny you should post this.

I collected my 2.2 diesel XF 5 days ago and like you I like the idea of a flappy paddle gear box. I tried a couple of gear changes, didn’t feel comfortable with it and gave up, to be fair though the auto box works like a dream and in sport mode was better than I imagined. Still nice to tell people you have flappy paddle things when you get asked about your car.

Good morning both,  significant other and I were delighted to move into the world of flappy-paddle on our '07 V8 XK but initially did have a concern.    Whenever we went into paddle mode it would work fine for a short while then suddenly top gear would be selected irrespective of what we were doing.  A little off-putting on the approach to a wide open curve, tight corner or whatever.    We then discovered that the paddle system will default into top gear after a certain time UNLESS you have selected Sport Mode.   Since then, delight and when we do go out in the XK (high dry days and holidays) we have great fun with the paddle system where appropriate.

Moral........read the handbook properly!!

I find the paddles invaluable, and they do exactly what I want.

My normal driving style is pretty relaxed, and the gearbox learns that style and acts in a relaxed manner. However, when I want to spurt past something in a fairly small gap the automatic relaxed style obviously doesn’t deliver, and I will always use the paddles. Having finished the overtake it reverts to the auto mode after 30 seconds or so (as Carole says), which is exactly what I want.

If you want sport action all the time, use the Sport mode!

I use them fairly regularly, generally when I'm having "fun", mine is a diesel so I mostly try to keep the revs somewhere between 2 and 4 thousand.

Also handy if you want to pop it down a couple of gears going in to a bend.
