Can anyone tell me if the crankshaft pulley and tensioner replacement on an X type 2.0d is a job that can be done by an amateur mechanic.
I have some mechanical experience. I have recently changed the EGR valve successfully.

Or alternatively if there is a reasonably priced mechanic in the North Birmingham area.

Hi Allen, I suggest that would depend upon your definition of 'amateur'.  I'm no DIY buff but having had my independent mechanic recently fit an Overrunning Alternator Pulley (OAP) which is in the same area as the job you describe, there are special tools that are required in order for the work to be completed properly so unless you are in the highest quartile of 'amateur' (with a comprehensive toolkit!) I would suggest a qualified mechanic.  Whilst there it would be a good idea to replace the auxiliary belt (more tools!).  Pity you're not in South London for I fear I have no connections in Brum.  Good Luck.

just had the same job done on my x type and mechanic said it was a difficult job mainly due to poor access/ Replaced pulley, tensioner and belt and also did Oil and filter change. Took car in at 8:30 and picked it up at 3:30 so labour shouldn`t be too bad. He said that the pulley was very worn and if it breaks it destroys the timing case. Just done in time by the sound of it. I will let you know the cost when I get the bill.

Cheers

Hi everyone, Now got bill for Oil and filter change and replacing crankshaft pulley, tensioner and belt. £350:14

Quite reasonable I thought, given the difficulty of the job.

Cheers
