Hello everyone, I'm very new. I have about a year ago picked up one of these (1996) I really like it and mechanically it is very sound having just sailed through the MOT. The underbody is good and it has just 76000 on the clock.

My question; there is some obvious rust bubbling in about four places and the wing has broken through into visible rust. The bonnet and boot have also oxidised and dulled a bit. Should I go for a complete respray c 2.5k or get it done in bits?

Hi Mark and welcome to the club.

I would be inclined to examine my bank balance to assess the options.  But my head says I should get the rust cured first.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi

Most body shops can get perfect matches and usually blow into the next panel so you can't tell

If the panel can be replaced with a sound non rust panel, that's all way's a better option to swap rather than repair and usually cheaper, less hours involved

Also once you have repaired or swapped any panels, make sure you get the car rust treated, lots of companies doing it now

Also if you car is the 4.0L, Have the chain tensioner been replaced, oe one's were plastic and can fail big style, later updated ones are made of metal and don't fail

Cheers

Thanks both, So to summarise

Get the rust sorted by changing panels rather than repair to panels.

Then get it rust treated.

How can I tell if the chain tensioner is the later updated metal type? (This is a 1996 4.0 straight 6)
