XF r sport

Hi guys, I'm just about to buy a jag XF R-Sport for£12,456 it's got 100,000 miles on the clock with one owner and full service history, obviously the high mileage puts me off a bit but I love the car and it's been well looked after, my question is do you guys think the car will be ok with that sort of mileage it's a 14 plate, also I don't think it's had the cam belt done so I was wondering if anyone knew what sort of mileage it should be done and the cost of such a repair, any wisdom would be great guys thanks

There is a free App called  Vehicle Smart  which is worth looking at, although the car will not have an MOT record being only three years old.

The mileage is quite high and you will need to find out what kind of driving had been done  --  long regular commutes or sporadic very long journeys.

I once bought a Rover *825 V6 petrol with 22k on the clock but only 8 months old and it was a great car which I kept for 11 years and traded in after I had done 100k myself.

Having said that I would have another good look around at other 3 year old similar cars and see what mileages are on them before making up you mind.

My partner says that the timing belt comes in at 110K miles, some quote 105K, or 10 years.    In the case of the car you are looking at, the change is imminent (unless there is billing or a record on the Jaguar Service Database that it has been done).     Jaguar fixed price comes in at £375, an Independent might do it for less but we wouldn't go near a generic workshop.     This is one important job and if the belt fails, it's chipshop time for the power unit.

Everybody's purchase has to be what they feel comfortable with, but we would baulk at a motor that has covered that many miles, because there are going to be other items reaching their life expiry/getting sloppy in the not too distant future.

Hope this is helpful, and no doubt there will be others on the forum who can comment; whatever, beware of the dreaded "buyer's fever" which all too often can result in "repent at leisure!".    Good luck anyway and happy growling

Cheers for the replies guys, I'm at the stage where I want a jaguar and my affordability means I need high mileage, someone has to bite the bullet an take the older cars :) at 25 a jaguar is probably an impulse buy but it's awesome, I've been told 144k by a guy at jaguar for the cam belt so I'm not too bothered about that until then, with what you guys have said I'm going to pay £44 a month to cover anything that falls off the car, seems like a good investment to cover anything that goes wrong

A quick peek at the belt to establish if there are any cracks might not go amiss.  The mechanical cover you mention could be a good idea; does it cover the permanent grin that you will have once ownership begins?!     We'd call up several Jaguar places (dealer and Indie) to see what mileage they quote for the XF R belt change (not forgetting that the pulley should be changed at the same time); just to establish belt and braces (no pun intended).

Know what you mean about affordability v mileage.  Our '07 XK had only covered 6600 miles when we found it in April last year; there was a similar one available with 95K on the clock for £7K less.....you pays your money and takes your choice!

While the XF is s great car, I looked for an S type when my X Type was stolen, and for £9600 [four years ago I found a 2007 model = a 2.7 Diesel with only 48k on the clock and also with a new engine fitted by Jaguar after 28k miles while in Jaguar ownership. My car has all the bells and whistles, with over £11,000 of optional extras factory fitted.

It could be worth a few hours of googling to find an S type with a low mileage  --  there are some about.
