Gents,

I love owning the s type but have realised that over the past 12 months I am not doing the mileage I once did due to personal reasons.

With that in mind I have noticed that the egr valves etc never seem to get to run up to temp and that applies to the exhaust as well. Result every so often a loss of power and a bit of smoke due to the " coking up" of the internals. EGR cleaner does a great  job short term but inevitably isn't really fixing the issue.

My question is can anyone point me to a step by step guide or video on removing the egr valves? My intension is to either clean them or replace them . This will be done as well as the other bits liable to cause issues. A clean un sooted system should then be better and I can run the car a little more regularly.

As always your thoughts and advice will be appreciated and I look forward to your comments.

Steve.

Hi joe,

Its a 2004 2.7 diesel twin turbo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It looks manageable and well within my scope.

stan,

ive thought about blanking and remapping but the issue is only really due to standing and not being driven. I want to keep everything as original even if there's a little inconvenience along the way. Like anything some do make the change and some don't. Appreciate the idea.

Hi Steve

My partner and I are not mechanical experts, and certainly way behind the likes of Joe-Dot-Com with knowledge.    However, we have a low mileage '07 S-type 2.7D with all the EGR gubbins, and when we took it on (at 53K miles) in July last year, it had been mostly used for shortish commute.     Within a few weeks the DPF Full warning came on, and each time we carried out the regeneration.     We visited a local Independent Specialist who diagnosed that one of the EGR valves was sticking and blocked beyond the point of redemption.

Firstly, changing the O/S EGR is not too bad, although patience is required due to inaccessibility.    The N/S EGR can be a nightmare, as others on the forum will attest.

Steve, we are very like you........we like to keep both our S and XK X150 as they left the factory, so remaps etc would not be for us.    That's not to say that it's wrong, we all have our own views.

More importantly, we don't particularly go down the route of additives etc either, BUT even after having the offending EGR changed, we still (in 2500 miles or so) had the DPF amber warning come on again.        **Up to that point, we had always used supermarket fuel, basing our decision on cost.  However, although we were a little cynical, we did note a few folk on the forum singing the praises of Shell V-Power diesel (Shell's top-price diesel).      We gave it a go, and since changing over (we are now on our 5th tank of V-Power), we haven't had a problem, even though a fair bit of our motoring has been local.         A friendly local HMC&E fellow indicated that there is quite a difference between such as the V-Power and the bargain basement supermarket fuel.        You pays your pennies and takes your choice!

It may not work for everybody, but it was a fuss-free and comparatively cheap exercise for us, with very much the desired result.

Good luck in any case

We get our premium quality petrol and diesel from Costco. We used to buy Shell V-Power diesel, and have never been aware of any regeneration on my wife's diesel since doing so, and the Costco premium fuels are apparently just as good (but much cheaper!).

Interesting theory on the petrol although from experience and learning I'm not sure it  would work. I don't do the budget petrol and I'm pretty sure I can discount it.

Having temporarily used egr cleaner again, prior to emoting and cleaning, and taking her for a good blast on the motorway she is again running as she should with not a puff of smoke. The lasting solution is clearly to give the gubbins a good clear out and keep on top of the spray routine.

Its my own fault doing ridiculously short trips and I'm sure a large percentage of the issue is the cat not regenerating on top of the EGR.

Worth a try maybe once the problem is solved.

What you say makes sense.   Although premium fuel certainly did it for us.

We did find that an easier method of regeneration was to journey at normal speeds but use the manual hold to keep revs up at around 3000 or so for 15 mins.    More convenient than the motorway blast, with the same effect.

Whichever way you end up going, good luck in removing what can be an annoying issue.  Not, however, confined to Jaguar, as some folk seem to want to have you believe.

Happy (regeneration free) growling

Hi Carole,

I have never had the DPF Full message, but I do used the manual hold  every now and then to keep the revs over 2000.  Preventative maintenance!

As yet another thread which has started up, reference EGR valves, they are a b.... pain!

However, although our amber warning light accompanied by the script "DPF full..see handbook" came up several times a while ago, as we have previously stated, even (twice) after having the O/S EGR valve replaced, since converting to V-Power diesel.....nil problemo.                          Our normal use does, occasionally, involve a good "blast" for 10 minutes or so, accordingly "QED".

Still wouldn't swap the S, naturally we don't have the problem on our XK, although , thinking outside the box, a nice 4.2 Supercharged R V8 would be nice.  Wonder if Gaydon would miss their "last off the line" model?!

Steve, what you think was backed up by a chance conversation with our Jaguar Indie, so good luck!!

As always, happy growling

Ha ha. It's always good to get an opinion from the experts.....the owners and users. The wealth of experience on here is astounding and someone always has experience or answers to those irritating niggles that face us all.

last year I was blessed with paul who helped me retrofit a few bits and he was a great wealth of experience on the d2b retrofit and reprogramming and I've still been lucky with silly enquiries through the forum since then.

Keep up the good work all........

steve
