Hi, Just need to ask what an XKR 1998 is worth with or without an MOT? Private plate "XKR" on car, has sat for 4 years and started on button, has failed MOT on spongy brakes and ABS light on and that is all, passed everything else. Very straight car but is it worth paying for MOT or sell as is? Your views would be appreciated.

Regards

Kevin

Have a look on Autotrader, and this will give you an idea of what it might be worth if you get it through an MOT, and clear the ABS light.

Price is heavily influenced by condition, mileage and service history!

Hi

Like above have a look on the trader and eBay, for similar spec cars to give you a rough idea

the no MOT does not usually make much difference to value, but it will get less interest of buyer

but this makes a good bargaining tool

check the whole car, dont go off the mot, a different mot tester will do his own checks

also check on  apps like "vehicle smart" app or online at cazana, for the cars mot history, especially corrosion and use any info as a bargaining tool

also consider into the price getting the car home, driving it nowadays can trigger lots of fines, with ANPR cameras every where

cheers

Joe, I think Kevin is talking about selling, presumably getting information on behalf of a relative or friend - At least, that's how I read it!

Hi

If your selling, like I said it does'nt make a big difference on price, but it would sell a lot quicker with a mot

If you can take lots of pictures of the car, list any options it has and show any history it got

personally if it in good condition, I'd put it through a mot, it will sell a lot quicker

cheers

To me, if it has failed a recent MOT and the failure sheet is available to the prospective buyer, shouldn't be too much of a problem as he would know exactly what would be needed to be done to get it through and could figure that cost into the offer price. No MOT (ie long expired) or even a very short time till MOT expiry, is different as the buyer has no idea what an MOT will throw up.

It depends on the buyer: If it is an experienced buyer who can assess what is needed and do it himself, I agree.

If however it is not such a buyer, they will want a long MOT, so getting it through the MOT will not bother the experienced buyer but will attract other buyers.

So I am with Joe on this: It should sell more quickly with an MOT.

I agree David, with an MOT is more likely to attract a sale generally, and probably worthwhile for the seller to do. However I was sort of suggesting the more knowledgeable forum member looking for an XKR may be interested if it has recently failed ann MOT on those two items and can negotiate a good price.

That's good thinking!

I was previously quite interested in an XKR, so I can comment on this. For a brief period leading up to the early part of last year, it seemed as if the XKR price had hit rock bottom. Regularly seeing pretty decent looking ones, full MOT, no advertised faults for £5000 or less. Even a couple of later 4.2's with the better gearbox. I'm kinda gutted I didn't grab one when I could, but TBH I have enough on my plate so probably for the best!

Perhaps fuelled by a number of articles around the time of how this was an affordable supercar etc, I then noticed prices starting to rise and go beyond the sort of bargain basement level I was open to. Towards what one would pay for the later X150, where I then decided to focus my attention, before coming to my senses and agreeing with myself and my better half that perhaps I should fix all the cars I already have before buying new ones!

To be fair, and IMO only (but I have bought and sold c250 cars and retain a keen interest), a dealer, or informed punter is unlikely to want to give more than £1K for a 'spares or repair' with no MOT'd, and this could be less, even much less. It couldn't even be test driven and would technically have to be towed away. As your faults sound fairly minor, I'd suggest it was a no brainer / wise decision to pay the £hundreds and reaps the £thousands back in selling price.

Obviously, full valet before sale with all history ready and ideally 2 keys, present the car as an inspirational,  appreciating classic, you should be able to ask at least £5000 for it I'd have thought, even more maybe if clean and straight like you say. Better than the £500 you might get spares or repair if taken away on a trailer :wink1:

IMHO only, best of luck in any case, hope you get what you want / need for it
