I'm having a problem fathoming an odd behaviour on my driver's window in my new S-Type.

Either up or down, it moves a few inches then stops, until the switch is pressed again. No creaks or groans and it moves quickly enough.

The other three windows work fine.

I've tried the re-calibration procedure but it doesn't help.

Any ideas please?

Nothing specific, but in general, I'd say it was either mechanical or electrical.

Why, thank you, Captain Obvious!

It could be a slightly worn or bent slide or cog or something like that. And if the sensory apparatus is very sensitive, which it probably is on such a delicate car, it will cease operation. And when you push the button again, it starts another cycle and stops again when it senses that something is wrong. It could also be a sticky or dirty sensor or a loose connection. And if the sensory apparatus is very senstive, which it probably is on such a delicate car, it will cease operation. And when you push the button again, it starts another cycle and stops again when it senses that something is wrong.

Just my 2 euros.

edit: After many years of reparing cameras and such, I dare the assertion that no mechanical system is so complicated that you can't figure out how it works. If you can watch it operate, that is. Which means that you'll probably have to remove what's necessary to do just that. Sorry.

Hi Paul

This can some times be the window motor, there's a position sensor on the motor and this could of failed

another problem can be the wires in the door shut snap, causing faults on the door module

Hi Paul

I went through exactly the same thing with the passenger side window on my X350. No amount of lubrication could coax it to work and even with the whole regulator assembly out and on the bench with an independent supply ( Battery ) it was still jerking and intermittent. I suspect that a black box of tricks with a PCB is the culprit as the motor seemed fine. The black box no doubt controlled the limit stops etc but I couldn't fathom out how it worked. A £30 replacement regulator /motor unit from ebay saved the day and is still going strong.

Interestingly the first ebay offering turned out to be the wrong one and was from an S type. The main parts looked the same and I tried swapping over the black box onto my regulator/motor It then worked fine but stopped in the wrong place no matter how many times I tried to reset it.

Good luck

Pete

Hi Paul

did you pull the old one apart

I'm sure there a reed switch and magnet that give pulses as the window goes up or down

if you did pull it apart take some pictures

cheers

Joe  I still have the faulty motor/controller unit from my window saga ( I always keep stuff like that that's why my garage is full or rubbish ). I'll take some pics and you might be able to  fathom out how it works.

Hi

there's a lot of electronic in there for a window motor

looks like the position sensor is magnetic type

cheers pete for posting these up

thanks

No Problem Joe. I think the two small square sensors that sit close to the commutator above the brushes might have something to do with the positioning of the glass but my understanding of electronics is too basic to work it out.

I sometimes miss stuff like hand operated window winders, key operated locks, points etc but I suppose things like this keep the old grey matter ticking over
