Central Locking Problem with 2013 XF Portfolio S

I am a new member.

Sorry for the length of this but it sets out the entire story.

My 2013 XF Portfolio S saloon 3lts diesel auto has been working fine until recently with no known problems

I had not driven it much in the last 2-3 weeks due to illness. It stood outside.

On Monday 15^th January 2018 I unlocked the car on the key fob, the car bleeped, the lights came on, the doors unlocked and the mirrors folded out as usual. When I pushed the stop/start button the screen alerted me to a low battery but the car started perfectly fine and I drove it all day without any problem. The stop/start/ eco system worked fine as usual. Every time I stopped the car I was able to lock it with the fob key without problem and the mirrors folded in on locking and out on unlocking and the alarm system activated.

On Monday evening I disconnected both batteries and took them into the house to give them a good charge. Instinctively I closed the boot without thinking that I would be unable to open it now that I had removed the power supply and I did not drop the rear seats first which would have given me internal access to the boot !!. All the doors were unlocked and the bonnet was closed [and not opened at all throughout this process]

I took the manual key out of the key fob in order to open the boot manually. I removed the PVC cover hiding the barrel and inserted the key. The lock was very stiff but after about 15 minutes or so of wriggling back and forth it finally moved and the boot opened. I subsequently sprayed WD40 into the boot key barrel to lubricate it.

The car batteries were then charged overnight and both read around 13.9v after charge.

In the morning I unlocked the boot using the manual key. It was still stiff to open and took some force. The eco battery was connected first. No issue. The main battery was then connected. The ground [negative] cable was connected first and on immediately on connecting the positive cable to the battery the car Alarm sounded and the radio came on. I stopped the alarm by pushing the unlock button on the key fob and turned off the radio.

I then sat in the car and reset the parking brake, the window up/down travel and adjusted the clock. The car then started fist time without any warning notices on the dash/screen.

I took the car for a test drive. I noted that the passenger mirror dropped when selecting reverse…as it did previously… so that was fine.

On driving away I noticed the following:

a)    that the drive away locking no longer worked even after turning it on/off via the screen.

 

b)    I was unable to lock/unlock the car when depressing the buttons on the dash board instrument panel.

 

c)     When sitting inside the car with the engine running I was able to lock/unlock each door separately using the door locking leavers. However, on internally unlocking the drivers door it did not unlock any of the other doors as it did previously. 

 

d)    On turning off the engine and stepping out of the car and after ensuring all doors, boot and bonnet were closed properly I was unable to look the car by using the key fob.

The car therefore has a permanent fault, namely since replacing the batteries the car will not lock with the key fob.

The key is clearly talking to the car because after selecting “lock” on the key fob there is two bleeps which confirms that the alarm has activated but the bleeps indicates that a door might be open. You can hear a locking sound at the fuel filler door but none of the doors actually lock and the mirrors do not fold back.

The car is alarmed even though the doors are not lock because when you open any door the alarm sounds until you use the unlock button on the key fob to silence the alarm.

The only thing that I have done is

a)     Remove, recharge and refit both batteries.

b)    Used the manual key from the key fob to open the boot manually.

It seems to me that there is a good chance that the fault might be connected in some way with the boot/boot catch given that is the only part of the car I touched after removing the batteries but I am told that all inspections/testing carried out appear to have ruled this out.

There are no error messages on the dashboard of any nature.

I have replaced the battery in the keyfob [just in case] and the batteries on the car both read over 13.5volts

I have disconnected the battery for 20 mins grounded the positive cable and reconnected....no difference

My Local dealership is stumped and a jag specialist has had the car 2 days without finding any faults [including no fault codes show]

Any Idea's ???

Welcome to the club, Terry.

I am not too au fait with the XF, but I do know that the battery can cause a problem now and then.  There are some members with brilliant electrical knowledge, and hopefully someone will be along soon.

Problem resolved..........The car needed a recode at a cost of £90. Lesson learnt don't remove the batteries to recharge them!

Terry, i have exactly the same problem after changing the main battery yesterday. 

Could you let ne know what you mean/had done to your car to fix it. I know you say it was recoded but was that the car or the fob/s?

Hi Steve

Its the car that needed recoding not the fobs. The jaguar dealership i use were at a loss but I spoke to a Jaguar technician at the factory and he was clear that it could only be a code issue. I took it to a Jag specialist in Milton Keynes and they scratched their heads for two days. After I told them that the Jaguar factory told me that it must be a code issue they re-coded the car charged me £90 and all was back to normal.

Exactly the same problem here does anyone have anymore information with reference to re-coding the car I have SDD and can do most things but the term recoding the car is very generic. Any specific modules I'm thinking kvm but not sure what particular candidates etc. Any help gratefully received!

Can someone tell me what was needed coding (security code) in order to fix this fault have the same fault on a 13 plate xf

I'll close the loop on this and will also provide another recommendation for E&E in Milton Keynes. I had exactly the same problem other than the fact that my battery died as opposed to being left for some time but the consequences of removing and replacing it were the same.

I took my car to my local specialist who had a look and couldn't find any faults showing on SSD and also couldn't find any cause for the problem. I then bit the bullet and took it to my local JLR dealer who also couldn't find a problem and wanted to 'strip the doors' to see if they could get to the bottom of the problem. I told them I'd think about it and then gave E&E a call to see if they could help. I called E&E because I'd seen from Terry's post that they'd sorted his problem. They knew exactly what the problem was and how it should be fixed and said that they'd even had Techs from JLR phoning them to learn how to fix the problem! I live 110 miles from Milton Keynes but just wanted to get the problem fixed so booked it in and drove up this morning. They were finished before my backside had even hit the sofa in the waiting area so I was back on my way home again within about 6 minutes of them starting the job!

Essentially the door lock modules need a security re-learn which doesn't show as a fault on SSD as it isn't an error as such but more an absence of data. They used Autologic and it was an easy fix to get it working again; apparently it has some better workarounds compared to the Jaguar SSD software.

I'd happily recommend E&E as they knew what the problem was and got it sorted really quickly and at minimal cost. 🙂

I needed a new battery not long back, the car wouldn't start but being part of this group you do tend to pick a few things up so I knew disconnecting was a no no.

Left the battery on the car, charged it till I could start the engine, whipped it up my local indie, had it changed, £165 thank you very much and no mither.

I had a few warnings about battery being low and panicked a bit. I thought the best solution would be a new one, so toddled off to Halfords. Had to explain the need for constant power, so the guy plugged in a backup while swapping the battery. All in all, a great result for £120

If only tyres were as cheap!

I wanted to add to this thread as I encountered the same problem after a local garage installed a new battery for me. Without all the detail, their Autel system wouldn't reprogram so I went to another placewith the JLR software which also didn't work... I then came across this thread and booked in with a garage who use the Autogic software. 10 minute and on my way, all done. They're an indy Jag specialist.

Thanks James, going to see them on Wednesday - I am from Flintshire and had no joy finding anywhere local to do this - I was going to travel to EE services in MK but this will save me at least 2 hours

Fantastic, It's great to pass it along... I'm in Dolgellau but have family in Leics. so made a short weekend of it.

I'm going back in a couple of weeks to have a second key coded too.

Hi everyone, was going to start a new thread but decided to piggy back on this as the issues I've just encountered are very similar. Was getting messages on start up about low battery and "system will shut down in 1 minte" (never did). Plus the air vents wouldn't open as normal on start up and the eco stop / start wouldn't work. No loss that last one as I  can't stand it and usually switch it off whist driving. Anyhoo, decided to invest in a new battery. It's a 2013 XF 3.0 Portfolio that I've had since August 2017 so I figured if it was the original battery then it could do with changing anyway.

Technician friend of mind changed the battery this morning. Obviously had to reset the clock etc and all seemed ok until I locked the car using the fob. The mirrors wouldn't fold as they previously did. Also, upon clicking the fob twice as I always have there was the usual beep upon the second click (which was when the mirrors used to automatically fold). But now, not only do the mirrors NOT automatically fold as before but after a few moments there was a further, louder double beep - something I have never heard before. Opened the car again and went through all the settings - all set back to as before the battery change (twice) - locked the car again with a doule click and exactly the same. Ended up, opening the car once again, folding the mirrors using the door buttons and then just double click locking the car up and leaving it.

Reading through this thread I now presume that a recoding might be necessary??

Find the nearest garage with an Autologic machine and book it in. Takes about 10-15 minutes.

It’s in the owners hand book, no diagnostic tool required. Manually unlock all the doors inside the car, remove the emergency lock cover on the outside passenger front door handle, using the emergency key blade from inside the key fob turn and hold the lock to the unlock position and press the unlock button on the fob then turn the key and hold in the lock position then press the lock button on the fob and it should re-synchronise the key fob to the car.

This may well be a big no no with Jaguars but last time I changed a battery I knew that there would be issues with radio codes, window memory, central locking etc so I decided to do a little experiment. I connected my battery charger to the cables before I disconnected them. Switched on the charger, disconnected the cables, swapped the batteries, reconnected the cables switched off and disconnected the charger and the car worked exactly the way it did before I changed the battery! ZERO problems! 😉

My garage did the latter, however the voltage in the donor battery was lower than required and still triggered the problem. A freshly charged battery or a charger is the best way to go.

One. I don't have any spare batteries lying around & Two. Guaranteed voltage output. 🤨
