Recently changed my 2013 XFS sportbrake portfolio for a 2017 XFS saloon. Bothare 3.0 litre engines. In the saloon I experience vibration through the transmission tunnel at around 1500 revs. annoying and intrusive. Didn’t have it in the Sportbrake. Anyone else have the same issue? Also the saloon tends to hold high gears for too long before changing down. Are all the new models like this? Advice please. Many thanks.

Sounds like it might be transmission related rater than engine, you could get it checked by Midland transmissions in Kettering if you didn't want to chance the main dealers?

Hi Darrell,

I take your point but the torque converter etc is before the gear train and so spins at engine speed, just a thought :-)

hi

propshaft rubber dougnuts can fail and vibrate, or even inbalance, has it had any work done on diff, prop or gearbox

if prop is taken apart and not put back the exact same, it can cause vibration due to out of balance

gearbox, if it in sport, it does hold on to the gears for longer,

other thing the gearbox learns your driving style, so if previous owner drove it like that it will continue to do it for a while

getting the gearbox adaptations cleared, will clear all old driving styles and learn your alone

cheers

If it’s anything like the 2.2 the rear diff has a noise damper on it which was a service bulletin to remove if the customer experienced an issue at low revs. It’s one bolt a five minutes to remove. See below.

Thanks, that’s a very helpful response.

I find it hard to believe that all new XF’s suffer from this problem. It’s very irritating and I’m sure would’ve been picked up in professional reviews if it was normal. I can feel a fight with Jaguar is in the offing. I guess I could always test drive another one under the pretence that I want to part exchange if they give me the run around.

Update: Jaguar Service advise that it requires a modified exhaust bracket which they have placed on order. Apparently it’s a known issue with a mod to fix it. Need to book it in again.

Another update

Marshalls Jaguar Cambridge advised me that the exhaust bracket change would take one hour so I said I’d wait rather than have them collect the car. FIVE HOURS later the work was complete. No explanation, no real apology for 5 hours sitting in their reception area.  Worst of all the problem has not gone away. There’s still a drone/ vibration at 1500 rpm. Guess they’ll have it back. This time they can collect it themselves. Not going to wait.

I have the exact same issue. Vibration at 1500 revs, regardless of gear and road speed. The engine is smooth, I dont beleive it to be an engine issue. Its more pronounced under heavy load.

This is a 66 plate xfs with 3.0 v6 diesel that has done 15000 miles.

Its going in for a fix in September.

Good evening,

At the risk of resurrecting an old thread, I came here from a Google search.

I have posted similar over on jaguarforums.co.uk, but I believe the problems you describe also describe exactly the problem I am having with my 18 plate XJ.

It doesn't always like to downshift readily, and there is quite a booming vibration below 1500rpm or so on a light throttle, as if everything is labouring somewhat. Very unrefined. My previous 2015 XF-S (275bhp) and 2013 XF (240bhp) were far smoother.

Upon being persuaded to kickdown, everything is as smooth as silk at higher revs. And indeed, sometimes it does this itself. But for the most part, the car seems to want to drag itself up from low revs. 70mph in 8th seems to be right in this range, and a gentle acceleration from here (where the law allows, of course) is rather unrefined.

Did you get a fix for your issues, and if so, do you know what was done?

Many thanks!

Mark

I can contribute by adding something similar. My 2018XF vibrates at lowish revs at 22-24 mph (common in Kingston) and again at 31-33 mph. This is always on soft throttle, ie not accelerating or slowing. My main dealer has known of this for 18 months but until I insisted on a test drive with a technician have done nothing. He agreed, and proposed it was “harmonics” arising from the exhaust system being attached to the body rather than suspended; possibly dampers over tightened. Now, after 2 weeks, the dealer wants to return the car unchanged, and insists that the fault is my driving technique, causing the engine to stumble between gears. Oh, and I didn’t drive with a grade 4 technician, he was from QC.

This isn’t about the quality of my dealer, just intrigued to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Hello,

any luck finding the problem? I have 2016 XF 35t. And the same exact problem. At 1500RPM i have vibration. Also at idle. Not the mounts, cause i changed them. Not the exaust. Gearbox?

Hi I have similar noise in my XF 3.0D my 2010. That started last summer when driving in Italy at high ambient temperatures (28 to 30 C). Before that I newer hear it. In low temperatures like -10C of below here in Finland I do not hear it but again around zero C it its there again. Could it be that it is the engine support parts getting old? My car has already 260 tkm.

Has anybody solved the mystery of that problem?

I've checked the damper on the rear diff on my 3.0SC XFS but removing it didn't help at all.

I have a 2020 XF Sportbrake 3.0.

I took it in originally to resolve what I thought would be an engine mounting issue: When I go over a speed ramp (its also noticeable on certain undulations/bump, but easy to reproduce over a speed ramp) I get a secondary "bounce/bump". They have replaced the upper damper mountings/engine mounts/gearbox mounts and said it was cured. I have just picked up the car and it is exactly the same. They are saying that it is a characteristic of the car, others are the same............I would be grateful if any of you could contribute to this theory. It has taken them 2 months to get this far! However, I now have the vibration you refer to: vibration at light throttle load, any gear, at 1600-1700 rpm. I have yet to start the ball rolling to resolve this new issue, along with the original one.

Any contribution/help very much appreciated.

Neil
