Welcome to the club, Gareth.

The s type is a great car, and the V8 is a great engine.

Joe will give you some great tips, as he owns a similar car.

Hi Gareth

i bought one a month ago -  also an 02 4.2 v8

lovely car, you won’t be disappointed

biggest thing to check is the sills, they rot out, if they haven’t been done then they will likely need it unless it was never driven in winter or very well cared for!

Hi Gareth,

There is a small metal label on the body of the car which can ge see when you open the nearside front door.  Paint and trim codes are there.

I bet if it does need doing it'll be mega expensve job are they?

Richard made a good point concerning the sills.  A check on the location of previous owners can assist by giving you a guess to how well they car was looked after.  It need not be too expensive if you have a good garage and a good welder.

Welcome aboard Gareth,

I too had a V8 S Type and the engine and gearbox were both rock solid.

I did have problems with mine although it was a little older than yours so they may have made improvements by the time that tours came off the production line!

My first issue was with the windscreen wiper assembly - as it tends to seize due to water ingress into the brass sleeves, (that serve as bearings on the drivING shafts), but It is a simple fix to remove, clean and lubricate.

There was a knock on effect, however, and that was the fact that the water would then drip over the top of the cam covers and run into the spark plug recesses and cause misfiring.

Another simple fix however!

seems it needs a lot of welding etc underneath  is this a common problem  and if so how bad

Hi

There great car if you find a good one.

most important is sills, if sill are gone usually lower rear arches go aswell, have a look behind those covers, welding can cost from £250 up to £1000, depending where you are.

check all the electrics work,

give it a good blast, make sure you dont get restricted performance,

make sure headlight do the dance, go up and down, then level, every time you switch the ignition on, adjusters break inside headlights, replacement adjusters are available, but require bumper off to remove headlights,

check supercharger belt, if its ribbed both sides it ok, if it ribbed only on one side, then them belts are no longer available, £250 just just for the parts for the updated belt,

check for service history and gearbox service, 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 1st also 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd, gearchanges can be jerky or harsh if on early gearbox software,

Gearbox says sealed for life, but thats rubbish, if its done 65K or 10 years its due for service, genuine ZF service parts come in a £200, labour is on top

check registration on "vehicle smart" for mot history, avoid if there's lots of advisories for corrosion,

supercharger nose can be rattly is coupling is starting to fail,

look at tyre's, budget tyre's on these at the rear are lethal, also budget tyres also can mean skinflint owner, so budget tyre's, budget maintenance,

check if valley pipe has been replaced, £12 hose, £800 labor to fit,

check all the dash lights come on, traction, abs, airbags, engine management and then go off, seen a few with them taped over,

check both keys work and remotes, not cheap to replace, check brake pipes, drivers side next to fuel tank, pipes allways rot there, tanks has to be dropped to replace,

check heaters get hot and also go cold, both sides there seperate, can be a pain to fix,

check for water in boot and rear footwells, some are prone to leaking, also check keylock on bootlid works, they are prone to seizing and you only find out when you get a flat battery and you cant get in the boot,

try the electronic park brake, at least 5 times in a row, these can be really troublesome, but only usually when the battery is on its way out,

other places start to rust first are insides of the doors, front and rear, vertical seam, where the skin seam sealer is, starts under the paint, looks like spiders, under the paint,

also should drive lovely and smooth, there's lots of bushes on the S-type, so it there any knocking its most probably a bush gone.

cheers Joe.

Hi

If the majority of the car is good, especially engine and gearbox

then it would be worth have the welding done on it

I know quite a few people with S-type R's and  they really like there car two of them recently have had there sills done, one paid £250 to both sills done and other paid £500

they never considered anything else and once done these cars can only go up in value, the S-type R is the only s-type at the moment going up in value

cheers

hi

you can retro fit the bluetooth adapter

at the moment you have a phone module in the boot and the handset fitted to the armrest connector,

theres 2 options, if you have the handset fitted now

A fit the later combined phone/bluetooth module in the boot, along with the bluetooth antenna and fit a mic into the overhead console or

B fit a earlier type bluetooth module in the armrest and fit a mic in the overhead console, But, There's allways a but, this method means you need to swap some wires around in the phone module connector and some wires in the armrest connector, this is because your armrest connector is wired for handset, not bluetooth, is quite easy, if you want to go option B let me know and I can give you wiring diagram on where the wires have to be

also if you have jaguar voice fitted, you allready have a mic fitted to the overhead console, but recommend fitting the later type mic that is mounted between the console and sun visor, there far superior in sound quality

cheers

Joe
