Hi everyone, having just come back in to Jaguar S Type ownership my first frustrating experience has arisen.

My 2002 model year V8 has a cracked expansion tank and none are available at the moment from anywhere, alledgely due to poor

quality manufacture at JLR.There is no definite date for them to become available.

Since this part is well known you would of thought that by now the quality should be right.

Although my car is not overheating(yet) i feel disappointed that they are not available.

Has anyone had any success in repairing them?

Thanks everyone.

Thanks Kristian, but unfortunately i need the 1999-2002 pre facelift V8.

There seems to be plenty of the later ones, but i have been informed by Jaguar there has been a problem with quality of the earlier ones.

Thank you for taking the time to try and help.

I always call them, but out of stock is out of stock I guess. They might have an idea on options or when more are coming in etc

Hi Graham

Our Jaguar tech says definitely DON'T try repairing...recipe for disaster!

However, we live not far away from SNG Barratt (Bridgnorth) and use them for our XK, S-type & XJS............they are very helpful and very knowledgeable; also have a user friendly website.

They are showing expansion tank at £102.34 inc VAT for VIN number up to 45254, and at £81 inc VAT for VIN number 45255 onwards.

Suggest a call with your VIN number to hand!

Good luck and, as always, happy growling

They have a waiting list of 30 people, very helpful though, they are trying to see if they can get them manufactured.

Looks like i will hold off spending any money on the S Type until this gets resolved.

Very disappointed.

I have located some secondhand ones but my feeling is that it is a big risk as they too could be cracked and it seems there is no

safe way to repair them.

Prices seem high for them but marketplace driven i suppose.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions and help,i will post back any update.

I have ordered a secondhand expansion tank which i will let you know what it is like when it arrives.

They have given a 4 months warranty so it should be interesting.

My initial idea is to keep it as a backup until the new ones become available again.

I have received a secondhand expansion tank which took just two days to arrive.

I have posted a couple of pics and just wondering if there would be any tell tale signs of cracking?

Comments would be most welcome.

Thank You

Graham

Hi Graham,

Without a hands on close examination its impossible for me to say but I would look very closely at all the points where the tank fits to the body work or connects to pipes etc. as these would be where any vibration or movement might stress the material. May also be an idea to check those places where your current tank is leaking to see if there is comparable damage?

Cheers,

Steve

Just an update.

I had the replacement secondhand expansion tank fitted today, all working fine now.

The original was found to have a large vertical crack not visible without taking it out.

Fingers crossed that it will last until new ones are available.

Thanks to everyone for their contribution.

First rate Graham, did your mechanic offer any suggestions regarding the cause?

A few things really, the material its made up of,its position being bolted straight to the inner wing with vibration, subject to hot and cold temperatures in use.

I believe they moved its position on the later models.

The tank cost me £35 so if it can last 6 months i will be happy.
