2002 V6 engine rattle

I've had my beautiful blue X type for 8 months now and had no real issues with her.but now she has developed an intermittent engine rattle (sounds like a diesel).at first I thought it was transmission as I first heard it when changing gear,but then I started hearing it while the car is in neutral and revving the engine.

I don't think it's top end,but I'm puzzled as to why it's not constant.anyone else had the same issue?

2002 2.5 V6 petrol 101k miles
