I've owned my XK for 4 years and a Xjs for 2 years.

 I've now got muscle pain in my left knee and can only put this down to getting in and out of the car.

Anyone else suffering the same problem?

Hi Graham,

A lot depends in your age.  Getting in and out of my cars and SMWBO's smaller car demands a certain technique .  Having worked the method out amd after following the system in my car   I suddenly found it difficult to get in and out.  I also found the reason why I found it difficult --  it is called sciatica.

I just hope you don't get it!

Do you think that I'm 219 years old may have something to do with it?

Seriously though. The twisting of the left knee when getting in or out seems more pronounced than my previous cars.

But, getting older is a problem.

Hi Graham,

Getting older is a problem, which is the main reason I did not sell the house to buy an F Type, which is do find difficult to get into and more to get out .

But seriously, sciatica does affect me and the left knee is the problem with the sciatic nerve starting in the lower back and affecting the left knee on it's way down to the toes.

Hi Graham

As MOH would say...ditto.     We have a '07 X150 XK and, last June, on our way from the Midlands to Haynes Museum, MOH, whilst alighting from the XK, suffered a desperate collapse of the left knee which resulted in me having to drive home, once, of course, we had managed to get him into the passenger seat. (Getting him out again was no mean feat).

Turned out to be a bucket tear in the left knee which required surgery; all is now well, although full kneeling flexion is not advisable.

MOH had commented that, on occasions, his left knee felt a little strained in the XK.  The injury occurred whilst, as you put it, twisting the knee to alight from the car.   Consequently, getting in and out of any of our Jaguars...the XK, the XJS, or the S-type is now a case of swivel round so as to be sitting facing the outside, thence stand upright.   Getting in is a reverse of that process.

We wish you well with the problem.  Suffice to say, the Jaguar grin was temporarily absent, although, after surgery, we did recreate our trip to Haynes and the Jurassic Coast, and our enjoyment of various Jaguar events and ownership is undiminished, if carried out a little more carefully.

That the best thing to do, Graham.

I had guessed that sciatica was the problem as a colleague when I was still working was told by a Doctor to get an automatic car.  That then became an option on company cars - just a year after I retired.

Well said R2E........MOH has checked the shed and garages for removed redacteds, but didn't find any.  It could be the case,of course, that Jaguar, in cohorts with NHS, have superseded the part number.

With regards to the "little jump".......is the forum redacting programme on a weekend off??!!

P.S. We do find the S-type easiest, with the auto seat movement.  Perhaps, as you seem quite handy, you could fit a rise and recline chair?

By 'auto seat movement',  do you mean moving the seat back? So as to gain more space from the steering wheel.

Or, is there something I'm missing?

Hi Graham,

On the s Type there is a function that when you turn off the ignition and take out the key, the seat moves fully back, and the steering wheel moves upwards. You can get out quite easily.  When you get in and put the ignition key in and close the door, the seat returns to its set position, as does the steering wheel.   I was assuming the the XK had the same function.

In my wife's car, [Toyota Yaris] I move the seat back manually, which also makes it easy.

Absolutely right, Graham.  Our XK, and all others, don't have that function; only the S-type.      MOH finds that the previously mentioned process works perfectly, also in our XJS which is just as low!

Don't strain that knee by using it as a lever or support.

graham if your car as memory seats make one of them for getting in and out of the car..when your in the car just press the one for everyday driving

Given my history of knee and hip injuries I'm beginning to think this thread is the product of a conspiracy initiated by the First Lady to curtail my hunt for an XK - John Deere stealth or not.🤔

I use Memory 1 with the seat and the steering wheel in their furthest postion to get in and out of the car, and Memory 2 as the driving position. The favourite wife laughs at me, but she's the one who needs one of these: http://dyncdn.thg.dk/img/44107_0_m_400_700.jpg 🙂

I have no problem (yet) getting in and out of the XK. However, when the Lotus Elise first came out I had one on a test drive for the weekend. I absolutely loved it, but found that with the roof up I could only get out by rolling on to the pavement.

I believe that later models were slightly better, but by then I was also slightly older.....
