air con leak

recently got my x type with a 3 week old receipt for a new compressor and a regas only to find no aircon working after buying the car, turns out there was no gas in the system so went for a regas today and it failed to complete due to a leak, is there any way of finding the leak with no gas in the system also are the diy repair kits any good? thanks

soapy water test of system. 

needs a pressure in system first.  Nitrogen is safest.

Check condenser at front of radiator for damage.

In the 'old days' they used to add a UV florescent dye to the refrigerant so leaks were more easily detectable. No idea if they still do, but UV lights can be bought quite cheaply to do your own testing. I've had one for years.

Take it back to the place that fitted the compressor. Should be a bit of a guarantee on their work.
