Start/Stop not working!

The start stop function on any car is reliant on the main engine battery being completely charged, so if it is not working i would charge it and test again or have the battery condition checked. You might find the battery is getting weak..

When I got my 2015 XF the stop/start did not work. I took it back to the dealer and they rectified the problem. It wasnt  a problem with the main battery as this was new when I bought the car.  The dealer replaced something called a gateway so you will need to take it into a jag specialist or dealer to get it rectified.  I dont know what this will  cost though as I had my work done under warranty - being a jag it wont be cheap!    Personally I dont like the stop/start function and I always turn mine off.   Keep us posted on how you get on.  Good luck.

Hi Ian ,

Had the same problem with my 2.0D XF R sport.

Found i could charge the battery on lihgt charge for 24hrs, and start stop would work for a few days and then stop again.

i would then repeat the charging process and the same would happen again!

i then decided to check the alternator output, !  14.8 volts no load, and remaining at 14.8 volts fully loaded. (no fault here then)

Concluded it must be a tired battery! (coming up for 4 years old and 130,000 miles) , have changed the battery and the car is now working as it should.

There are numerous posts regarding stop start problems, most sorted with a battery change.

Its allso worth mentioning that the car started faultlessly with the old battery , and no other noticeable faults.

Could be worth getting a load test at local battery supplier., good luck.

John.

My XF is the same start/stop has never worked, the dealer checked the charge in the Battery and it was only 75% and they said it needs to be at least 85% for the start/Stop to work and they left it at that.

So i've kept at them to get it sorted, so i can't wait for Monday the 9th of December to come and they want the car over night to charge the battery and then we'll see what they say because i think they are not wanting to fit a new one and i can see why having looked at the Cost off these AGM Batteries.

I've a friend with an XE and he had to get a new battery and his start/Stop work's perfectly even within 2 or 3 minutes of leaving his house.

Regards Tom.

I drove the car into the Ford garage on Monday and left it with with them as they were going to charge the battery overnight, well i get a phone call on Tuesday

saying that the Start/Stop is still not working.

I left the car with them for another day as the weather was horrendous 4 lorries getting blown over and one landing on a police car on the A1 road.

So i get a phone call on the Wednesday and telling me that they've fitted a New Battery with a rating of  95AH  850A compared to the Jaguar battery with a rating  of 80AH  800A

and everything is working at the moment.

Regards Tom.

Hi All,

New to this forum and have just got my first jag. Had a merc before and must say glad I got the XF.

I have had the issue with the start/stop since i got the car and the dealer mentioned the possibility of a  faulty battery.  They have replaced it since then with a 95Ah   850A. They said that the secondary smaller battery was only 75% charged and therefore they had charged it further. Since then I took it for a very long run and still the start/stop doesnt work.☹️

Looks like a return visit to the dealer.  I have read suggestions of resetting the ECU/CPU by removing the -ve terminal and touching it to the +ve.

Has anyone tried this suggestions?

My 2014 XF start stop used to work; now it works ONCE every time I start the car , usually at the first stop. If the stop is prolonged , say over 45seconds , then whole AUdio System blanks out and it takes 10-15sec to work again. An independent electrical guy told it the Gateway START STOP module that is at fault . But the garage cannot rectify it

Just found this  site, like alot if not all xf owners my stop start did not work when I had the car which was 4 years old, The show room had it back and put the battery on charge after which it worked for a day! They said the battery was fine.

Having talked to lots of xf owners they all have the same problem, even a new car was ok for 8 months but has not worked since!  Was this stop start only put in the car to show good mpg and low emissions? for new sales, if so is this fraudulent a little like diesel emissions cases that have come to light ? My wife has a cheaper older car with stop start and it works fine every time

The battery has to be pretty much fully charged for stop/start to work. Takes a while charging it even doing a longer run as these car are very power hungry.

Have heard wrong battery output being installed causing issues not just with stop/start.

I have a 2013 jaguar xf estate with start stop problem.  The main battery was replaced  18 months ago, The start stop function never worked, l bought the car 4yr ago, the auxiliary battery just replaced,  start stop still not working. Halfords did battery test, main battery  shows 90% good condition. Could the gateway be at fault ?

I own a 2015 XF petrol car, and after much research on the stop/start system, I can offer a suggestion.

In the XF for example, there are two batteries. A large AGM type, that is used for starting the vehicle, and a smaller battery that runs the auxiliaries such as radio, lights etc, but also the stop/start function of the car. If this battery goes flat or dies, so does the stop/start system. In my case. being 7 years old, it had died of old age, while the AGM was still going strong. Replacing both fixed the problem.
While on this subject, I, like many others, and knowing how older starter motors functioned, was convinced that the motor pinion and ring gear would destroy each other with so many starts.
However this is not the case. The new starter motors used in stop/start, employ two activation solenoids, known as Tandem solenoids. When the car is almost stopped, the first solenoid synchronises and engages the starter motor pinion, to mesh with the ring gear, and stay meshed. When the foot is lifted off the brake, the second solenoid energises the starter motor, which being already connected to the ring gear, start in a fraction of a second.
Of course both the main battery and starter motor have been uprated.

...but it is always the Primary (Main) battery that actually turns the starter 🙂.
The secondary battery is there to run voltage sensitive systems such as all of the computer modules that are liable to low voltage supply causing corruption (such as when that battery is trying to turn the starter of a big diesel engine in a stop/start). It is always the main battery that actually starts the car. The fuction of the secondary battery is to provide a stable voltage to the sensitive electronics during a stop start.

However, if the car detects that either the primary (main) battery is too weak to carry out a re-start, or the secondary (little) battery is too weak to keep the computers supplied with a steady voltage, then the stop/start will not engage.

The stop start "not working" problem 9 times out of 10 is simply that the battery is considered by the battery management system (BMS) to be too discharged to continue to risk stop start gobbling up more amps on an already depleted battery. It is a "safety" feature of the BMS to prevent the stop start technology leaving you unable to start the vehicle when the battery is too depleted. All that is needed is to let the car do its thing and charge up again on a longer journey, the car will temporarily disable stop start until it deems the battery sufficiently charged. Short journeys to Tesco will not do and are probably the problem for a depleted battery! Or you can try charging the battery with a AGM type trickle charger at no more than 4 amps, high amps can kill an AGM battery by overheating and blowing the battery valve to vent internal pressure. "Full charge" for an AGM battery for those with a volt/multi meter is considered greater or equal to 12.6 Volts but less than or equal to 13.0 Volts.

Is it ok to charge the auxiliary battery with my Ctek. I have charged the main battery but the auxillary is almost flat (5volts) 2013 xf 2.2 diesel.

Thanks

Rob

yes its ok to charge it with a ctek, but if the battery is at 5volts its no good and no amount of charging will bring it back

just replace it with a new one and will give you less problems in the long run

a lot of people put jump leads on the car leads while swapping the battery so no setting are lost

cheers

Joe
