Hi there from the Island of Guernsey.  I have a lovely 2005 S-type (2.5l V6) which has just come up to 38000 miles (Guernsey is not very big).  In the last few weeks the fuel gauge has developed a mind of its own.  Until recently it worked OK when leaving home.  Then slowly the needle would drop slightly before suddenly dropping to empty.  Five minutes later the gauge would then start working and occasionally read higher than previously. Later the same thing would  happen again.  Leaving work, the gauge read correctly and the whole scenario was repeated. When the gauge reads empty, the message comes up 'fuel data error'.

Yesterday the gauge died altogether and now I am subjected to a 5 second alarm signal every 10 minutes which maybe related to the problem. My local auto electrician tells me that the fuel sender unit is an integral part of the fuel pump and the whole unit has to be replaced which involves taking the tank out etc.  The quote was in excess of £600.

Any help or advice would be welcome please.

You may find it's the guage it's self that's at fault experienced same problem the solution was to replace entire binical with a secondhand unit around £40 from eBay and another 40 to have correct milage reset  a lot heaper fix

Thomas has made a good suggestion,  I had a faulty wing mirror on my s type.  A replacement would cost £286,  eBay had one for £27.90,  All is now well.

Apparently the gauge itself is a common fault.

The needles work off a servo motor which cab become noisy or erratic. If you’re handy with a soldering iron the motor can be replaced at a cost of around £4.  The art number is X27-589 and is used on many makes of car.

I have a motor on order.........!

Sorry for the delay in responding and thank you for the suggestion.  I take it that by 'the binnacle' you mean the whole instrument cluster. I will now try and find one on e-bay and will get back to you.

hi

your better off get yours repaired or just swap the fuel gauge

the dash is part of the security system and if you swap it the car wont start again

you would need the dash recoding to the car before it would run again and the mileage cant be altered

can only be done with Jaguar IDS/SDD software, either main dealer or a indy with the software, either way not going to be cheap

also if you google dash diagnostics you can put your dash into diagnostic mode and test all the gauges

Cost me £85 to have the instrument binical paired to the car and millege corrected

I have the same petrol gauge fault on my 2006 S Type, it is an inherent fault on the S Type Jag. The dashboard cluster is Ford in origin. There is a company in Waterlooville, Hants called Cartronix who specialise in repairing dashboard clusters in a all vehicles. Cost is £150 plus £40 to remove and replace it. If you replace the cluster cluster with used one it has to recoded using Jaguar software, can be expensive and the fault will probably re-occur.
