Jaguar x type 2009. Seem to have a problem with electric windows. All windows apart from drivers window. All the others will only go up and down in small increments. This happens you press for one operation up and down or nudging window up and down. To get windows to rise you have to multi click the switches (8 times) to get them to rise. I have tried with child safety on and off. I also tried disconnecting battery to try some kind of reset. Non of the windows are jammed. The car has only done 26000 miles. It is strange they all go up and down in the same increment .?

Try a window reset first.

Raise the window until fully closed, then press and hold the UP switch for a few seconds. If it needs a reset that will sort it out Each windows needs doing.

Hi Clive, did you get this sorted as i have recently bought a 2009 X-type jag and both drivers side windows do this exact same thing. Has to be button pressed 8 times to get the windows on the drivers side to move up a few cms and will only move down a few inches each time but only needs a press each time to move down. But to get drivers side windows up, you have to press the button up 8 times at a time to get nthe window to close a few inches

I know its a long time ago, but did anybody get this issue sorted as I have exactly the same problem now?

Also, downpress (part or all the way) works every time for  3 inches of movement but on all 4 windows you have to press upswitch (part or all the way) exactly 8 times before it will move 3 inches and again 8 times for the next move. Fuse is fine but annoyingly the extractor flicked off the virtually inaccessible motor fuse and disappeared below the footwell lining - lost forever methinks! The resetting procedure doesn't work. Please help as I just bought my first Jaguar and would hate for it to be something stupid that makes it my last...

Hi,

I've just bought a 2009 X-type and same thing with both driver's side windows.  They go down in increments and then the window button has to be tapped right times for it to go back up again - in small increments.

What's the solution?  Please help!!

Not quite the same problem but mine would go down all the way but going up was in stages. Tried the reset idea and it worked! My windows go all the way up & down as they should now. Just to let you know the fix works

Always check the battery. Just because some stuff is working does not mean it is OK. Central locking and windows can go wrong when the battery is not up to scratch—I'm just saying this because it is a cheap thing to do and will avoid that day when it won't start!

Have exactly the same prob with front passenger window on my X type.have been reading all the comments on this problem but no one seems to know why it happens.pressing the button 8 times makes it work but in small movements.what on earth is that all about.

The fact that so many cars have this problem should be  of interest to jaguar, why the silence?

Did anyone get a fix for this problem, please? Reset doesn't work. Tried quite a few things but still no good and doing it up and down on all 4 windows so must be some kind of computer error, maybe?

Hi again Charlie,

I found this response to the same issue on another Forum site, albeit on an X-350 model this time, but sounds like the same issue.

"I'm not sure exactly what's happening, but the inching is typical of a short press on the button. You may not have noticed that the button has two depths of press - a short press that runs the motor only while you keep the button in that position, and a deeper press that should cause the window to travel to its furthest extent even if you now take your finger off while the window is still moving.

That doesn't help much. Resetting the windows is what you need to do after disconnecting the battery. For each window, press each button fully to first lower the window to its lowest point, and then back to the highest, keeping your finger on the appropriate button until each movement stops, and you should hear a slight click about 1/2 second after it stops moving. (If you don't get the click, repeat the up-down cycle.) That click is the motor turning off having stalled, and I think that's what tells the ECU what the maximum travel is (which is what you are resetting).

That said, counting up to 8 seems weird, and suggests something deeper - wiring issues, switch issues or ECU issues. As it's all windows, likely the ECU. If I remember correctly, the window gubbins are controlled by the driver's side ECU behind a panel in the trim between the accelerator pedal and the door opening. The first port of call is to try disconnecting the battery, getting behind that cover, and unplugging and replugging everything (to "wipe" the contacts), reconnect the battery and reset."

Thanks for this, Jim. Much obliged. I have bought a new battery and tried the reset but to no avail but I will try the fix mentioned in the last paragraph and see if that helps. I will post back to this site one way or another.

Cheers, Charlie

For those that stumble across this looking for a solution, I had the same problem and have just fixed it by replacing the regulator. My drivers window was going down fine but only going up a few cm after the 8th button press each time. I had tried cleaning my switch and then a new switch before trying the regulator. I could be wrong, but as I understand it it's because the position sensor has failed so although the motor works, the window doesn't know where it is, and is not happy about moving in one go. I found that if I didn't let it go up the full few cm each time, it'll let you continously do little movements. Regulator was £30 for drivers door which seems to be the most expensive one, and took maybe a little over an hour. Hope this helps

Thanks for sharing your fix, nathan! That's really helpful info. I've been following this thread and it's great to see someone found a solution.
