My 2002 XJ8 Exec. has just developed a starting fault which the AA said was due to the fuel pump failing. The replacement job looks very daunting, so, I would really like to be sure that the problem is correctly diagnosed. It began with the engine turning over but not firing, then the key fob wouldn't work at all, and presumably, not set or or disable the alarm. I'm wondering if anyone had advice on replacing the fuel pump or how to check the alarm system. Does a fault on the alarm turn off the fuel pump?

I would say if there is an issue with the key fob as well as the engine not running then the fault is with the immobiliser.

Maybe worth getting a Jaguar specialist or an auto-electrician to accurately diagnose the fault and go from there....but my money is on the immobiliser

Do you have another spare key fob available?

Thanks for the reply. The key fob suddenly decided to work perfectly next day. The engine still doesn't start but the fuel pump isn't running. A very reliable mechanic advises me that he has had to change several of this era pumps and suggests a new one be fitted. Not a job I'm looking forward to. Any tips?

Hi

These cars are very sensitive to low battery, is the battery fully charged

should read at least 12.4volts if left over night,

Id be tempted put it on charge over night and try it,

batteries and low voltage causes all kinds of problems and is the biggest cause of most issues

replacing the fuel pump looks a pain on these

my S-type has a plastic cover you remove under the back seat to access the fuel pumps, dont look like the xj has

have a look below, taken from jtis on changing fuel pump on xj 2002

cheers

also, have you checked theres 12 volts on the fuel pump connections, could be wiring relays and others

you could try putting 12 volts onto the pump connection and see if it will run, before removing tank
