Hi Nigel and welcome to the club.

A lot depends on whether you are doing long runs on a dual carriageway or motorway, wether you are spending more time on minor roads or single lane roads.

I have an s type with the 2.7 diesel and when I am not doing a long run I do tend to show a mileage or around 30 mpg.  On a long run I will get on average about 45 mpg.

I always use Shell V Power and it does give a better mpg as well as a smoother ride.  I also use an additive [Millers ECO plus diesel] which keeps the EGR valves clean and also helps the DPF regenerate.

Regards,

Peter.

HI Peter

My XF has the 2.2l engine and I get about 38mpg around town and about 50mpg on a long run.  I also add Diesel Magic which is supposed to be good for keeping the injectors clean and Iv'e just started to add some Halfords DPF cleaner as most of my driving is short, town based journeys.

Hi Nigel,

I have a 2011 3.0L XF-S.

I do lots of local runs in town and country lanes; that gives me high 20's mpg. Quite often we take the car across to Ireland, and on the drive to West Wales I get high 40s. Briefly saw 54mpg on the M4 as well!

I took Peter's advice some time ago and use premium diesel with regular shots of the Millers Oil additive.

Enjoy your XF!

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jon

Thanks for reply

Yes im going to take peters advice about using the better diesel and the millers additive which ive bought ready then im hoping to see

more mpg i did manage to get 35mpg today which i thought was good even though i was popping along.I,m finding the quicker i drive the xf the better the fuel economy than

driving at a slower speed dont know if its a myth

All the best

Nigel

Hi Nigel,

I have found that it is not the speed of a car that controls the mpg of a car, it is the smoothness of the driving.  Acceleration with a big engine needs not to push the pedal to the metal but the but to bring the car up to the required speed and feel the gear changes on the automatic gearbox [if on your car].

A steady and smooth drive without using the brakes too much will give a better mpg than those drivers who give the pedal too much and then have to brake hard at every bend and  road junction.

You can be quick and smooth.

Regards,

Peter.
