Seen a 2006 S Type V6 Sport 3.0 Automatic on a local garage forecourt which looks in excellent condition and a reasonable price £3500. 78,000 on the clock with FSH undertaken  at Jaguar main dealers and specialists. Would be grateful for any input with regards to questions i should be asking or problems i may encounter on a 14 year old vehicle, cam belt change, transmission, cooling system etc.

HI

FOR £500 i WOULD NOT EXPECT MUCH

Would definitely check the sills for rot as there can completely rot away, there hidden with plastic covers

service history and make sure every thing works

for that price, if its got 12 month mot, I would not expect it to last the 12 month

check mot history with app like vehicle smart to check for any nastys on previous mot's

but for £500  would not expect much

cheers

Sorry to piggyback off of someone else's enquiry but I am also in the market for a new car and an S-Type has become available locally for $7200 (5500 GBP, they hold their price in the US).  Its a 2005 model and it has 36,000 miles from new.

I know about the sill rot, but what is the 6 speed auto gearbox like? And how about the electronic handbrake. Are they well made, or made of toffee and a given fail?

I would also really appreciate any general feedback.  Thank you in advance

Welcome to the club, Jon.

I have had my 2007 s type for 7 years and am still very pleased.

The ZF auto gearbox should give you no worry.  It is the one used by Rolls Royce and Bentley after all.  I have never had a serious problem with it, although it did get a bit annoyed with me for using the manual side too often!

The electronic handbrake has been a bit awkward on a few occasions but the solution is to keep your battery well charged.  The battery on the s type should be changed every 5 years.

The car itself is a very good drive, and holds the road superbly in all conditions.

Hope this helps.

Peter.

Had my 2.7 D from new (Dec 2006), it's coming up for 100k and I still love it.

The electronic handbrake has never missed a beat.

If you don't run it for a couple of weeks you might find some awkward problems so I would definitely invest in a good battery charger/conditioner (CTEK 7 is what I have).

Can't really say about the gearbox or it's longevity because I had a 'fault' indicated and it locked into safe mode at around 60k so I had a Jaguar re-conditioned replacement fitted, which was never as smooth as the original. However, in hindsight, this was a big, very expensive mistake, because the problem was almost certainly one of the wheel sensors, which are prone to failure (but inexpensive to have fixed) and for some reason cause DSC failure warnings, amongst others, and a gearbox fault warning.
