Firstly thank you for letting me join.

I am hoping you can impart some wisdom. I have just sold my Mercedes ML. I have always liked the X Type harking back to old world style and as my wife has a Honda CR V having space in a second car is not a priority.

I have done quite a lot of research and narrowed it down to the diesels. 2.2 without the DPF or a newer 2 Litre? I know both have inherent problems but I would be grateful for the wisdom of both cars owners, giving a critical  overview of  of ownership, issues and overall experience. Also having had over 200bhp, would dropping down to a 2 Litre with 130bhp be just to much. Finally are cars fitted with the DPF as problematic as I have read?

I would go for a 2:2 with a manual 6 speed gearbox, as the auto gearbox has the DPF. The 2:0 litre only has a 5 speed gearbox.

You will need to check the sills behind the plastic cover sills that are below the doors as they can be a mot failure.

I think a lot of the problems with the DPF was due to the wrong engine Oil having been used ( the Oil should be a Low Ash C1 WSS M2C 934B  for an X Type with a DPF) and the DPF is fitted to faraway from the Engine.

As the XE and X260 XF have the DPF fitted right next to the Engine, and have very few problems .

HI Gary and welcome to the club.

I had a 2.5 All wheel drive x type and I really enjoyed it.  It was a manual gearbox and the petrol engine was a little thirsty  --  a long run would give you about 34 mpg at best.

IIf you want something less thirsty I would agree with Tom.

I now have an s type with the 2.7 D engine which gives around 45mpg and never had a problem with the DPF  -  premium fuel and the correct Oil is correct.
