Hello,
I have a 2005 Jaguar S-type 3ltr petrol auto and I like it, however I need an auto electrician. I'm based in Altrincham Cheshire, just south of Manchester.

My electric hand brake had jammed and the warning alarm sounding. RAC had a go then I dropped it with a Jaguar specialist who informs me the problem is the SCP cannot communicate with the handbrake due to a break in the circuit,  probably a broken wire somewhere. He suggests that finding the break in amongst the mountain of wiring is too large a problem and as such, cannot offer a time-scale, or price to track it down.

I did take the chance and ask and paid them to check the wiring in what they thought was the most likely place, which they said was at the front, under bumper area. They found nothing.

I'm not so much looking for an explanation or advice, as I probably won't understand the information, more looking for someone local to use. An Auto electrician who can diagnose, price up and cure the problem. Anyone know, or recommend one in my area ish?

Regards,

Hi Robbo,

Thanks for your comment on my thread - Yes, I do love my S type (owned since 2010) and will continue to do so...but sometimes it tests me greatly. 🙂

I don't know if I can assist or not but I'm a little confused as to why the auto electrician suspects the electronic parking brake problem would be due to problems with wiring under your front bumper.? Maybe this is simply down to my ignorance. As I said, I may not be able to help but may I ask a couple of questions?

What exactly is happening with your electronic parking brake (EPB) when you switch on the ignition? What messages appear on your dash info screen? Is the park brake stuck on or off?

Also, has anyone connected a DTC (fault code) reader and if so what faults does it show?

Cheers

Hello Keith,
No point trying to thrash it out with me. I only get it generally.

The problem has apparently moved on from the obvious modules, codes etc. The problem is particularly unusual.  Nothing is communicating with each other, The SCP not being able to communicate and CAN no communication with abs ecm and transmission..leads to the theory of a brake in the circuit. And by that, they mean absolutely anywhere in the wiring or other modules in the car and there is plenty of that. One large wiring loom being at the front.

They pretty much told me, nicely, the car isn't worth the man hours to track down the break. Just couldn't give me a time scale, so I'm currently shopping around. One of those jobs no one wants.

Hi Robbo, I understand now that it appears far more involved than a simple parking brake issue. I'm sorry I am unable to offer any insight.

However, there are many people on this forum who are extremely knowledgeable who may be able to shed some light on this problem for you. I know it can be a real worry and incredibly frustrating trying to find the cause of an issue but there is no harm in trying and much better than throwing money at it. In my experience, very few 'professional' car repairers want to admit they do not know what is wrong with your car and it usually ends up costing you whilst they fish to find out.

Very best wishes for solving the problem.

hi

easiest option, rather than trying to find the fault just rewire the 2 scp connections to the module to a nearest working module

so id link the epb module to rear body module, there all wired in parallel, so find the connections on the rear body module and link it to the epb module

cheers

Thank you Keith and Joe for the in put. Yes it does all sound a little messy. As it stands, the problem is writing the car off. So I'll have to shop around for a second opinion.

However Joe.. I have no knowledge of what you are saying, but I will be bouncing your comments off the specialist mechanics we use and others. I'm hoping to find someone local ish to me for the second opinion. What do you do Joe, professional or enthusiast or both?  (V8 very nice)

err, hlod on. Joe, you sound just like the auto electrician I'm looking for.. I'm in Altrincham, Cheshire, you're in Staffordshire! ..or is it bad forum etiquette, to say what I'm thinking?

Alternatively, can you recommend someone in my region?

hi

wrong time of year for me its too cold at the moment

there must be someone local to you

can you still drive the car, you should be able to release the park brake and drive it

I take it you've tried swapping the module in the boot, they are a common fail if theres damp in the boot and there quite cheap on eBay

only place I know local is AWJ automotive, the Jaguar specialist, maybe worth a phone call

also I take it you battery is in tip top condition, if the battery is low is causes lots of problems like this,

cheers

ah no Joe. Sounds like I'm back to square one..

(taking it to a Jag specialist is what backed me into this corner in the first place).

Hello again,

I did swing by a local garage with a good reputation as auto electricians for a second opinion..

They have not tested the vehicle, but do confirm that the diagnosis offered by the independent Jag specialist, can and does happen and as such, there could well be a break in the system which could be near impossible to track down. Also, the option of by-passing and running a parallel wire is not possible..

The original diagnosis from the Jag specialist, bearing in mind, no punctuation and that the RAC cut the handbrake cable, word for word was:

"Handbrake fault. Found cable broken, renew cable test ok intermittently faulty try new module.
Found no communication with handbrake SCP problem and CAN network faults no communication with abs ecm and transmission.
Carry out wiring test behind front bumper requires full CAN and SCP network tests and wiring checks maybe modules or wiring."

So, is my S type infact a write off?

In put please.

Nice when a thread concludes, especially with a happy ending...

Fixed. I found Jagman (David) in Wigan, who instantly knew something was wrong with the previous diagnosis of electrical circuit break and write off.. and said so. He had a poke around and bingo.Turns out it was the hand break motor.

Jagman made it painless and relatively inexpensive in the end. I'll be using him again..

HI

its always turns out be something simple
