Hi guys I’m looking to buy a XF but I’m not sure which one is the best option and how reliable it is? Maybe someone can help me to chose? I would be appreciate. Thanks

I've had my X260 XF for 18 month's after having 3 X Type's,and I think it's a great car it has the 2:0 litre 180 hp 4 cylinder diesel engine and i think that it's a great engine and powerful enough for me. But some of the early diesels ( not heard of any petrol engine's having this) are having problems with stretched timing chain's and the cost to replace is £1,500 pounds if caught in time. ( Seemingly there are other makes with the same problem )they say that it's not a good idea to have the engine idling and yet there's a remote app that let's you start the engine so that it warms up the car before you drive off. A different type of timing chain wasn't fitted till 2019.

It all comes down to what mileage you would be doing, diesels don't like short journeys and if your mileage is only 5 to 15 per day you would probably be better with a petrol engine. And there's the V6 3:0 litre diesel engine that some member's prefer for it's power and smoothness but servicing costs cost more with the V 6

Thanks for that, few questions, I’m looking to buy min 2016 are they having this timing chain problems? And the coast is £1500 at the dealer or any garage? I’m looking to get portfolio or r-sport do you know are they much different to each other?

Thanks

The timing chain issues are mostly with the XE models and have mileage of 80,000 and over.

The £1,500 pounds is not jag dealer's price.

What you should look for is a good service history and as low a mileage you can get and don't buy an EX Hire car because you don't know how they've been treated, and if you buy one make sure it's had a service with the correct engine Oil and then service the car every year and not 2 year's as recommended by Jaguar.

The problem some owner's have had is because they kept driving the car when a rattling noise was noticed along with warning light's, you never here about all the cars that's never suffered any problems.

A member has said that you can get a good deal on diesel cars at the moment because the do gooders want everything to be green, and put money aside in case you might need it for a major repair that's certainly what i'm doing.

When i was looking for a XF, I would be looking on the internet and some i liked were 3 to 400 hundred miles away but i eventually bought one from a garage 30 miles away and the first owner lives just 10 miles away.

It's difficult at the moment to take a car for a test drive, and it's a buyer's market and there are plenty of cars out there.

I prefer the Portfolio as it has a softer suspension and i prefer the firmness of the seats in the Portfolio and i have the light oyster which I like, but the bolsters can suffer scuffs on the piping and some owner's prefer the Black leather.

It also depends on what the first owner ordered when new, I have the folding rear seats which i think that they're standard on the Portfolio.

I’m looking for XF as is bigger. Is the timing chain need to be change at 80000 miles? I know all cars has a problems just want to know what I can expect and how much would be to fix it. You right is hard to even view the car now and I don’t want to spend 10k with out checking. What do you think about Prestige? Is it worth buying?
thanks for you help

Hi

Personally I prefer the X250 facelift models as they feel a little more special than the X260 (to me). Also I am a fan of the Sportbrake as think they look even nicer than the saloon. If your budget is around £10k I would be looking for something like this: https://used.jaguar.co.uk/models-xf?_gl=1*rcsysg*_gcl_aw*R0NMLjE2MDc2ODg0MTAuQ0tQVzhvUHl4ZTBDRmNXQmhRb2RiU01EeVE.*_gcl_dc*R0NMLjE2MDc2ODg0MTAuQ0tQVzhvUHl4ZTBDRmNXQmhRb2RiU01EeVE.&_ga=2.75552533.1639783868.1613142310-2008595706.1607688410#/details/3074326.

I am a big fan of the 2.2 diesel in 200bhp spec. More than powerful enough and strong as you like.

If you buy an approved used car you can be reasonably certain it will be OK, although delivery might be an issue with the Lockdown.

If not buying Jag Approved look for full service history, check EVERYTHING works and make sure there is no water in the boot or footwells as there are several computer modules "low down" which are vulnerable to water ingress.

Whatever you get you will love almost certainly love it as they are a lovely car.

This car looks good to me but unfortunately my parent want 2016 year and is not much I can do about it, if I push my budget I can spend 12k. Again thanks for your help

The timing chain's don't need to be changed ( you could ask for an updated chain kit to be fitted but i believe jaguar are  not that helpful ) and some car's may never have a problem,if you can get a car with a good service history and as low a mileage as you can. I don't do a lot of short journeys and that could be one of the causes of the stretched chain's and also the Start/ Stop could be a cause as well when the car is used for short journeys.

I have not looked at a Prestige model but i'm led to believe that there's less insulation and maybe less door seals but i'm not a 100% on that.

I would say that your biggest problem is that your not going to be able to have a proper road test in these difficult times.

I thoroughly enjoy my XF and i wouldn't swap it for a BMW or a Audi or a Merc.

Thanks for your help, hopefully I will find a good one.

Your welcome, you should make a list of what you would like on the XF because it will probably have on it what the first owner ordered ( ie memory seats, folding rear seats, space saver spare wheel, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel )

Regards Tom.

@Trooper2142 is that an issue with the ingenium engine i have just purchased a XF Checkered Flag addition 2020 model,  and it now has the Ingenium , I have done 6K since november so will expect to hit well over the 80k mark before i'm done so would be worth me keeping an eye out if its this engine.

Hi Wojciech,

Looks nice, miles are low, but personally, I can't stand the more recent plasticky interior, pretty much as BigJohn said on Friday.

But any XF will bring a smile to your face!

Cheers,
Jon

hi, silly question but if buying from a car supermarket I guess these are all fleet cars. Would such only have a 2 yearly service and no real idea of history? They seem to offer the best prices other than a dodgy trader. Just trying to find a reputable source to purchase with pref p,ex?

I got my last car from the Car people now the Car shop at Sheffield. I can honestly say that it was a great deal. But the car still had one years dealer warranty so it wasn’t a risk. but I had no issues anyway and would certainly buy from them again. Also they are part  of sytner group.

I'm led to believe that they Changed to a different type of timing chain's in 2019 so you car should be fine.

Can always buy a warranty if concerned about things going on.

key is making sure you get options you want, wide variety of toys on these cars.
