Daimler XJ X300 1996: Auto sticks in 1st gear

I have recently bought a Daimler XJ X300 Limo, as of today it sticks in 1st gear - have stopped and restarted the car and it was fine for about 2 miles then it dropped into 1st again.  Any ideas what is causing it or how to fix?
