Boot Lid

Okay, silly question time.

When You open the boot from the key fob should the lid just pop open a shade or fully open?

Ever since I've owned this car the boot has just pop open a crack, but over the last few weeks, it now opens fully.

I'm just curious as to which, if any, is the correct operation. (Maybe it's the heat and the hot air's trying to get out  :)  )

Mine opens fully if there is nothing (shopping bags etc) that could rub against it. However the spring setting is marginal, so sometimes I have to give it a little nudge and hope that nobody sees me do it!. If the spring were to be too strong it could be dangerous.

On the X250 some owner's have fitted stronger struts

and on the X260 there are 2 Springs 1on each side and are behind the side walls with 2 settings on each side and can be adjusted into the second position by using a length off strong cord ( use a screw a driver to pull the cord ) so that the spring can be hooked into position.

That guy on Youtube is from South Africa. He's a one-man repair manual for minor fixes and upgrades, well worth a watch.

I did what he said but used too large a drill bit, but I did get mine to open about half way so that if I'm carrying something I can still open it the rest of the way with just a nudge.

I was told that it should only open slightly. So if you don’t shut it correctly and don’t latch it at all it will not bounce open. Plus at low speed the key will open the boot on mine don’t know if that’s right but a friend said the same so I tried it 😂

One or two have said that the design of the hinge is such that it should open all the way. After the "adjustment" I made I noticed there's a lot more resistance when trying to close it and I'm a little concerned that I might sprain something, so I may put it back to how it was.

Note that I didn't change the struts, and in one of the YT videos the lid didn't open fully until they replaced the struts with new ones.

I've left mine in the part-open mode. It raises about a foot from the closed position, but needs a harder slam to close it. I have a habit of catching the boot opening button next to the fog light button in the car - so much so that I'm considering disabling the button - so for now I've decided it's probably not a good idea to have it opening the whole way.

The restricted boot opening was put in place after an injury claim in the US market,  a lid opened too quickly and too high hitting someone under the chin so to avoid further claims from the less intelligent we all suffer.  There's a simple mod to derestrict.

Thanks, that's good information and explains why it appears to be designed to fully item but doesn't.

At least its not like the Ford electric ones. As I opened my boot in the supermarket car park the other day, a woman who had parked next to me was looking very smug as she opened hers by waiving her foot underneath the car. I was in my car and driving away while she was still waiting for her tailgate to fully open. 😂
