A bit of a disaster...

Hi All,

So there I was driving into Horsham, doing about 25mph, when I heard a loud bang from the front left of my 2011 XF-S.

Then the steering pulled really, really hard to the left and the front wheel hit the curb, followed by a terrible grinding noise.

Managed to just about get the car to a safe spot, jumped out to see that the front left suspension had collapsed, sending the turning left at an alarming angle and the body down onto the tyre.

It seems that some component also punched its way through the wheel from the inside.

Now with my local indy Jag dealer with an initial estimate of between £3K - £6K for parts, plus labour.

Love the car, but is it worth it?

Ironically, we were planning to take the Jag to Ireland today, relieved this didn't happen on the M4 on the way to the ferry!

Cheers,
J

Thanks Peter,

I walked the road looking for potholes or raised drain covers - nothing!

Just reported it to my insurance company to see if they can cover the cost of repair - I really hope they don't want to scrap it!

Now have to drive to Ireland in SWMBO's Audi TT 😞

Hi Gary,

I'd be surprised too, but never know! Potholes! The road has just been resurfaced!

Car had done 83666 miles when it was MOTd on August 19th, hardly any since then.

Love the car, but it has cost me a lot since I bought it at the end of September 2018. Just need it to get through until March or April next year, when I'll be looking to upgrade to something newer.

Ho-Hum

Cheers,

Jon

Sorry to hear this 😞

3-6k sounds like a lot if just suspension damage or have other things been trashed. Would be tempted to get it to an independent garage you can.

Suspect will be close to a insurance write off if closer to 6k

hi

I would look a used parts and take it to a independent garage

try some where like auto reserve jaguar, very good used parts

would be a lot cheaper and just as good using good used genuine jaguar parts

cheers

Joe

I have to say I was thinking exactly the same thing, that does sound like a lot. Always worth asking around as prices and quotes can be miles apart.

Mine's an MY 2010 XF with 52000 miles on it, which is why I was asking, just wondered if it's something I needed to keep an eye on but a catastrophic failure like that seems odd.

Hi All,

Sorry for lack of response - currently on holiday in Ireland!

The quote finally came in nearer to £3K than £6K, seems the higher end would have been if the rack was damaged. Looks like the insurance will cover it, but still waiting for the final decision. Hopefully tomorrow.

Cheers,

Jon

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Gary,

Thanks for asking - they promised a decision today or Monday. Car is just about ready to go according to the service manager at my local indy dealer.

Fingers well & truly crossed!

Cheers,
Jon

Hi All,

Thanks for the supportive comments!

It's finally back home! Only cost to me is my insurance excess (and probably a higher premium next time!).

Feels good to have it back! Only problem is that the new wheel shows up the rest.

Cheers,
Jon
