Keyless question: Locked / not locked!

Hi everyone,

I'm a new member having just bought an XF Sportbrake (13 reg).  The first Jag after many years of Beemer ownership.  Love the car so far but I am slightly baffled by the keyless locking.  I've read the manual, googled and browsed stories here, but still not clear.  I lock the car, sometimes pressing the lock button on the remote twice and hear the bleep a few seconds later.  When I conceal the remote some distance away (much more than a metre), I can still open the doors.  The alarm goes off, but being able to open the doors is not sufficient security - contents could be stolen, if not the car.  When I lock the doors and the keyless remote is nowhere near, I don't expect to be able to pull open the doors!

Have I got something wrong in the locking process (I don't think I have)?  Is this a known "feature"?!  Or a known problem?  I'd be grateful for advice, to avoid the need to go to a main dealer.  Many thanks

Hi, I normally make sure I hear the beeps which means it is fully locked up.

I also have a keyless wallet for both keys to prevent the signal being detected by the car once locked up. Not sure on the range but it is a good few metres, plus stops people using devices to pick up your signal to steal your car.

If you get a wallet, drop the key inside, it should stop you opening the door even standing next to the car.

If everything is working correctly then you should hear one beep on double locking the car. You should then be able to place the fob at least 1 meter away from the car and not be able to open it.

Thanks for feedback. I think there must be a problem. I have a specialist nearby I can consult. Unless anyone knows a lock specialist in Hampshire who would get right to the issue? Thanks again

I have 2013 Sportbrake. On mine a single press of the lock on the remote locks the car. A second press engages the deadlocks and will be confirmed by a single beep. I think the "logic" is the same in the keyless system. That is the single beep means the computers have recieved confirmation from each of the door and tailgate locks that the "lock" action was successful. If they don't get that confirmation you are given a double beep instead. That suggests you are locking the car. Is it every lock you can still open after this or just the drivers door?

I would try locking at the limit of the remotes range (walk away trying to lock until you reach a range where it won't lock then add a couple of yards with the key pressed to your head). Once you get a single beep take the key even further away before trying to return to the car (obviously without the key) then check each entry point. Only thing I can think of is a mechanical failure in one mechanism which engages the lock mechanism sufficiently to allow a successful lock to be mis-reported. If all entry points are unlocked but the car still only gives a single beep I am at a loss.....

Mark, sounds similar to what I have just gone through. Lock with the key and doors lock but got the double bleep. Turns out the drivers door was not locking, the rest were. Mirrors would not close either. End result was a new drivers door lock this week from the dealer at a cost of over £500. Now everything works as it should. Single Bleep when locking. Press twice for deadlocks (think that was a Ford thing). Hope you can avoid a bill.

@GolfyGi think you’ve hit the nail on the head there. I have been through the locking routine, as was previously suggested, and it is just the driver’s door. I have it booked in with a specialist, so let’s see if I’m in for a £500 bill!

Wow 500 is steep, bet it not that hard to change unless it needs some form of programming.

Door locks are plug and play so that price will be more to do with labour and the cost of a new part.

Bit fiddly but an hour of taking your time should see it done and working for just the price of the part.

Reporting back on this, now I’ve had it fixed. It was the driver’s door locking unit, which is complete unit to swap out. It also controls the wing mirrors, which didn’t previously retract. I’m pleased to report that the independent specialist (more like total Jag enthusiast) charged £289, nowhere near the feared £500.

Watched the You Tube video of the guy changing the drivers door lock and thought noooooooooo. Sadly on east coast of scotland so no specialists near by, hence booked in the the stealers.

Interesting. I have the double beep problem when trying to lock the doors with the button on the handles, but it's intermittent. Sometimes I have to try again by leaving it for a second then pressing the button again, sometimes I have to try a different door. Driver's door seems to be the one that doesn't work most of the time, left rear seems to work every time, varies with the other two doors.
