Hi all,

So, I visit my nephew regularly. For the last 2 years of visiting, I have noticed a 2005 XK8 sat on one of his neighbours drive and it has not been moved, or even started now for these last 2 years at least. The car is filthy, weeds are growing from the drive up over the bonnet of the car and the tyres are flat. Its heartbreaking to see a car like this be so neglected.

I am very tempted to knock on the owners front door and offer to take it off their hands. I appreciate there could be an underlying issue with the car which is why it is still sat there, but if you don`t ask, you don`t get right?

How much should I be offering for a car in this condition? I feel I may get a great deal on this depending on its overall condition, and as its not being used, I am hoping the owner will be happy for me to take it off his hands!!

A quick look at the classifieds will give you an idea of how much these cars fetch, in running order. However, 4 new tyres, brakes, possible suspension parts, not to mention engine recommissioning and the inevitable rust.

Based on this and why it was laid up in the first place, I wouldn’t go above 2k. As you say, you won’t know unless you ask.

Did it, I knocked on the door. The guy barely spoke English. After a bit of deliberating I managed to get the message across and offered him a grand. He though about it and said no. Its difficult to have a negotiable conversation with him unfortunately, but may go back in a few days and try a bit more.

Appreciate you are keen to acquire this car. However with the description you give of how it has be stood for some years I would give serious though to buying this particular car at all, let alone at what price. Being as the cars are prone to rust as well as it will need new tyres and lord knows how much spent on welding and paintwork. That is only the start, there is also what condition the interior is in, where have the weeds penetrated and what damage have they done. At this stage you have no idea of mechanical condition either. Unless you are able and willing to potentially spend a fortune I would be more inclined to look for a car in a very much more presentable condition to start with.

Good Luck and Best Wishes , John.

Thank you for your comments and concerns.

I totally agree with you on condition, hence why I will not offer much more. I do however relish the challenge of a car like this condition, and spending a fair amount of time refurbishing. The works are not a great problem for me as I would enjoy doing this with my son, my only concern is how much I will part with before hand.

Time , work and money not being much of a consideration then I suggest you go for it and be prepared to produce a show stopper of a car. Looking forward to seeing the photos as the job progresses.

Best Wishes, John
