Being one of those who believed the X-Type was a fancy Mondeo and was very snobbish about it, "not a real Jag" etc, I took one in part exchange (2009 2.0D SE 169000miles), I sell Mercedes C Class, BMW 3 series etc but now have to say that they are absolute rubbish in comparison, the part exchange X-Type is now MY car, sold my own as no longer need it and am amazed every time I drive it, it is much smaller than I am used to but everyone I change gear and feel the torque just waiting to be used puts a smile on my face, roadholding leaves the competition struggling to compete. Why did no-one tell me about these earlier?

169000 miles, drives like new. Only issue is passenger front window one touch doesn't work and have to use the '8 presses' to use.

The X-Type can be a very good car if maintained correctly and has had quite a bit of bad press.

They did have issues with timing chains the same as Mondeo's but again, comes down to how the car has been maintained and driven

Hi, I've just bought a 3 litre 2004 X type sportwagon for a song. 200,000 kilometers but the V6 still has loads of life in it. A bit thirsty, does around 10 litres every 100 clicks, which is 550 kms on a 60 litre tank. Anyway, the thing that did surprise me was how hard the suspension seems. I've changed the shocks and put new tires on, but around town, the tiniest bump or crack in the road surface is felt. I'd be interested to know if other X type versions are as rigid. On the motorway, it sits pretty and there's no surface noise...
