Hi all,

New to the group having just bought an S-Type R 3 weeks ago. Meant to join sooner but sadly only getting round to it as car developed coolant leak last night. Home without overheating but quite a quick drip off under tray towards back of engine bay area. Waiting to hear back from garage I bought it from (who have been helpful so far before this) and just wondered if anyone knows a common week spot on the v8 supercharged motor?

Thanks.

Phil.

HI

That will be the famous valley pipe, £20 hose, costs anywhere from £500 to £1000 to change due to very labour intensive job.

if its leaking down the back of the engine and down the gearbox, it is

quite a bit cheaper if you do it your self then costs are not so bad, did mine myself a few year ago

if you need any more info just ask

cheers

Thanks Joe.

Is it a job that needs the car up on a 4 poster or can it be done on diy ramps just with the front up? I can do most mechanical stuff myself but access is the only question. I suppose the under tray has to come off. Need to get a good workshop manual. Any suggestions?

Thanks. Phil.

hi

no all the work is done from above

drain cooling system, remove expansion tank, induction elbow, upper induction pipe to throttle body, both belts need come off, then egr and throttle body with elbow underneath, then supercharger to intercooler inlet pipe, then supercharger

workshop manual via jaguar repair http://www.jagrepair.com/

workshop here http://www.jagrepair.com/images/AutoRepairPhotos/CarPDFFiles/SType/S-Type 2002.5-2008-FSM-Workshop.pdf

this is the pipe that fails, lower one original one looks about to fail, upper one is new

its always the short section that fails, which I have replaced with a silicone hose which is far superior as it has 5 plies of reinforcement and much higher pressure rating.

also worth replacing any hoses that look perished, water pump if its still original and also the push fit fitting on the rear elbow, under throttle body, this push always fails after it been disturbed and will cause air leak and lean codes after.

also worth replacing the Oil in the supercharger while it off

all gaskets and seals I used were all genuine parts

cheers

Joe

Thanks Joe.

Does sound pretty tough repair for diyer like me, even if can do from above. I guess what you be described explains the high labour costs Joe estimated.

yes unfortunately the hose is buried right under the supercharger

depends how handy you are, I did mine over 2 days and replaced anything looking tired and all genuine gaskets

i found it quite straight forward, but Ive always done all my own work on cars

worth getting some prices if your not hppy doing it yourself

cheers

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions and links but unfortunately me and the garage, despite trying to get help from the local Jag dealer too, are still not sorted. Small hose found to be leaking. Part number looks like 5R83-6Y438-BB (but might have some digits wrong) I've attached a picture with ruler for size. Also ordered what we thought it could be from dealer and got much bigger part 6R83-8K534-CB. Have attached picture of that too next to the removed one. Am thinking might be better ordering full set of hoses to get right one and change others too. Any suggestions? I'm getting desperate and frustrated not being able to drive it!

Thanks.

Phil.

hi

does it go from the aux pump to the supercharger charge cooler

if so is it this one https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/#/UK/parts/76256c1a-f1a1-4151-9449-8058f6fef750?fromList=S-Type and X-Type(12) > S-Type(49) > RADIATOR AND PUMP-SUPERCHARGER Assembly(31091)&fromCategory=Node Intercooler pump(Node Id 3094774)

look on sng barratt all hoses are listed plus pics

cheers

Thanks Joe.

I'll take a look at that, although the part number and inlet/outlet angles look different.

I'll look at the link for all the hoses and see what I can find.

Thanks.

Well, I spent some time looking closer myself at the garage today and am sure now that the small hose is a bodge from a previous leak.

It goes from a proper spigot on what might be the thermostat housing? Not completely sure about that but have attached a photo of it which shows an electrical connector immediately above it.

The other end attached to a short metal jointing piece which is connected to a hose running under the supercharger.

So i do think its a bodge and that small hose I've been searciing for, with your help, doesn't exist as a Jag part after all!

If that all makes sense to you I might try a better fix than what has failed this time.

Thanks.

Phil.
