So I was looking into buying, an x type at first, but the things that changed my mind are, that the transfer case can fail between 50-80k kilometers if driven hard (also no rwd) and that it isn't that comfortable for a person that's 1.90cm or more. So I did the next most logical thing and went looking for an s type and right off the start I eliminated the 2.5, 2.7 and 4.0 engines, then I eliminated the pre interior facelift models and was wondering which engine is purely more reliable the 3.0 or 4.2? If you send any modified exhaust sound clips of both engines, I will really appreciate it.

Interesting that you eliminated the X Type on the basis of no four wheel drive, as there is a four wheel drive model.

Also that you decided on eliminating so much on the S-Type range.

I do wonder if you have read much of this forum, because if you have you would have found many submissions on virtually all Jaguar models where owners get problems with all models of Jaguar.

Being an S-Type owner I am well aware of how they produce many fault codes. A fairly high percentage of codes often eventually relate back to low battery charge being low. The S-Type is renown for being heavy on battery discharge when not used regularly over a good distance.

You would be well advised to invest in a decent Jaguar OBD2 fault reader and a QTEK battery charger/conditioner. That applying to most models but particularly in respect of battery charge for the S-Type.

By the way I love my 2005 Facelift 2.5V6 Petrol auto with 65,000 miles, very much, despite the challenges it can regularly present.

Enjoy your eventual purchase and take good care of it. Best Wishes and Regards, John

Hey John, I eliminated the x type because it's either fwd or AWD and not rwd, thank you for the battery heavy usage info I have read a bit about it , but didn't know it could cause a lot of errors, and I eliminated the 2.5 because it seems way too underpowered and the 4.0 from the timing chain tensioner issue and I don't like the 2002 and older models because of the interior. From what I know the 3.0 and 4.2 engines aren't unreliable, but I want to hear and learn more about them so I can pick the best option for me.

Underpowered is a subjective matter in my opinion. As much as overpowered could be. As for my 2.5 V6 I can assure you for my requirements of a Jaguar, it is not underpowered. Also I do not like diesel powered cars.  It has to be said though that whilst I am still a very keen and active driver I do not do power at my age of 72 years young, like I used to when younger with the likes of Nissan Skylines etc. One R34 GTR I once owned and upgraded was producing some 450+ BHP.

Good Luck finding your right car. Regards, John

Hello Alexander,

When I was looking for my S-Type I was sure that I wanted a 4.2, however, it may sound silly but I found I was looking at dark blue cars more than any other colour and the colour turned out to be more important so I got a 3.0 pacific blue and haven't regretted my choice at all. I've had the car 4 years now and the engine hasn't missed a beat. It purrs along until you put your foot down then it really growls like a big cat.

hi

all the engines are very good as long as there looked after

the 4.2's V8's are very smooth, I have the S-type R and the engine is amazing, so smooth and can be driven very lazy and effortless, you can barely tell when it changes gear

if your after a manual, thens its a 3.0 as the 4.2 is only auto, but I think if you want altimate cruiser, then it auto, they drive so much nicer

cheers

Joe
