How Serious is the Code?

The problems stemming from a P0781 OBD2 trouble code typically start out small, then they can escalate very quickly as the damage progresses.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0781 include:

  • Check engine light
  • Hard or erratic shifts
  • Slipping between 1st and 2nd gears
  • Complete failure to complete the 1-2 shift
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Overheating
  • Limp Mode

Causes

  • Low transmission fluid
  • Dirty transmission fluid / filter
  • Frayed wiring / damaged connectors
  • Failed 1-2 shift solenoid
  • Failed transmission pump
  • Pressure blockage
  • Valve body issue
  • TCM or ECU failure

is there a dip stick for the auto box on the 2004 xj6

Barry

I do not know what mileage your car has done. If the transmission is showing any signs of not working correctly I would personally change the transmission fluid (or have it changed). My S-type has only done 64,00 miles from new but transmission fluids/filter etc, were change at 60,000 miles. I find it rather hard (being a Dinosaur of 72 years of age) to accept that a transmission unit can be sealed for life ???????.

Surely the change of fluid is going to depend upon how/what/where etc, etc, the car is used for.

Best Wishes and Regards, John

If it has ONLY done it the once I would not react in any fashion as long as it reset with turning ignition off. That has happened with my S-Type and reset by turning ignition off cured it on the occasion. You are dealing with Jaguar electronics so do not be surprised at some occasional false/negative readings. This will be especially true if the battery charge is not kept well up at all times, they seem to be prone to suffering with Parasitic discharge.

I have a CTEK MS 7 (charger/restorer) that I use at least one per month, if not more, for at least 24 hrs, if not longer. It keeps the battery well charged and seems to protect from too many yellow lights or warnings. The CTEK is very popular amongst owners on this Forum and well worth the investment.

I still stand by what I said about not accepting filled/sealed for life transmission fluids. My personal approach at 86K miles would be to change the transmission fluid, that is of course assuming that there is no service history/proof that it has been done at an earlier mileage.

Best Wishes and Regards, John
