2005 S-Type Facelift 2.5 V6 Auto.

Have only ever used what is now E10 petrol in my car, dependent upon the fuel providing any additives that may be required. The car has 67,000 miles and is serviced annually (usually around 4,000 miles annual).

No known faults, but have recently wondered if I should use a fuel additive of some description ?

Any advice and / or recommendations of products would be much appreciated.

Many thanks and Regards, John

Hi John

If you use premium fuels (e.g. Shell, BP, etc) as opposed to Supermarket fuels then the additives are usually refined into the fuel and much better for the engine (albeit a little more costly)

I personally would not use any aftermarket additives after fuelling the car as the majority are usually 'Snake Oil' rather anything beneficial such as Redex (which cannot be used on modern engines unfortunately)

Thanks very much for the advice. It seems if I carry on doing what I have always done then I shall be doing the best I can.

Best Wishes and  Regards, John

To be fair, last time I looked the price difference between a branded fuel and supermarket fuel was virtually the same and in some places even cheaper!

Currently in the local area that I frequent the difference between Shell/BP etc and supermarket is about 2p per litre, so not massive savings on one over the other.

Hi

I also dont use any additives , but certain octane booster help with emissions

also find by using premium fuel, you get better mpg's and it always seems to rum smoother

cheers

Cheers Joe,

It seems Premium Fuel and no additives is the answer. In my case I just stay as I have been doing.

as said above I only use premium unleaded. Much quieter and smoother running and improved mpg, worth the slight extra cost per litre.

The only other product I use is Forte fuel system cleaner. When at about quarter tank pour in a bottle of Forte then give car a good blast for a few miles. Cleans the entire system through and massively reduces emissions. Have used this product for years on my LR's (diesel version) and now Gas version on the X Type. Was advised to use this by mechanic as the Disco had a 90% chance of ruining fuel pump when changing the fuel filter so every yearly service used Forte.
