Hi all, Im in some desperate need of some help please......

I have a 2013 XF S 3.0D had an issue with the alternator (Burnt out), which I changed but now it still wont start, I will be replacing the battery for a new one, but at the Mo I'm using  a battery from another vehicle and it still wont start.

Is there a fuse to check or something which could have blown/ starting fuse or something, any advise would be greatly appreciated as I'm pulling my hair out...

Is the engine actually cranking when it should? Also is the "spare" battery big enough to do the job?

It's also possible the immobiliser is in a lockdown state, especially if the original battery went flat and it hasn't been cycled through the lock/arm and unlock/disarm procedure to reset the immobiliser and alarm.

Hi Dave,

Basically the misses was driving it, and the battery not charging light came on, when she stopped the was a bit of smoke coming from the alternator location.

When she tried starting it again after phoning me in a panic, she said it was completely dead.

when recovery truck turned up to collect her, the car had engaged the handbrake and put itself into park.

Once the car was back with us we discovered the alternator had failed, got a new one then tried to start it off my L200 battery so plenty of power, and nowt. The smaller battery was full so no issue with that.

doesn't even crank over, and cant get a battery till Tuesday annoyingly.

If it has gone into lockdown state how do i get it out? I'm guessing to plug in OBD.

If you have a look there Nick, there are several procedures, reprogramming the emergency brake (handbrake), auto-windows and so on and another section on the battery which should give the information you need.

I'm guessing the original battery was still in the car and you used jump leads from your L200? If so, i seriously doubt any car would start if the original battery was completely flat, even without the various procedures to reprogram everything. Also make sure whatever battery you fit in the XF is fully charged as a emi-charged battery can void the alternator warranty.

I'd wait until tuesday, fit the new battery then go through all the procedures. After that, hopefully you'll have a fully runnign car again, you may also have to go through a driving procedure to get the ECU to re-learn the fuel trims etc.
