Hi all,

TURBO FAILURE £20k replacement engine work!

Any urgent advice would be greatly appreciated. Never thought I would be in this situation and truly heartbroken! I bought a 2017 F-Pace Portfolio from a Jaguar Dealer in July 2019 for just shy of £27k. It had 55k on the clock. I have never bought any car more than about £13k previously with experience of smaller BMW, Audi, VW, all doing mileages well into the late 150k+. But with a young and growing family I chose to up our motoring game to what I thought would be the height of our car buying abilities and have great motoring adventures together. During it's time with us I have had the timing chains replaced after stretching (under Jaguar warranty) - Around £2k of work, along side DAB failure, as well as inoperable front headlamp. Then last year, June'22, the car came to a spluttering stop in the middle of a four lane dual carriageway.  AA towed to Jag dealer to be informed that the crank pulley had "fallen apart" and split the intake hose. Another £2k, not covered by the select extended warranty I took out, with a small contribution returned by JLR after a fair amount of calls.

A few weeks ago, the car again spluttered to a stop. AA towed to the same dealer to be informed that the turbo had failed and the "catastrophic engine failure", as well as CATS and DSP gone. The car has done 89k now. The dealer came back and said that it would cost £19,500 to sort. At which point I was speechless, and haven't really recovered from the news yet. The warranty guys have been out and assessed the car and agreed on the £3k max contribution that the select agreement has. I never thought that there would be such damage to require much for than twice this amount - in my thinking of worst case scenarios! How wrong was I? the dealership have informed me that the nut that holds the turbo on came off! How can a car which cost over £50k new, have such a weak spot of weakness to need nearly £20k of work on it? I have called JLR customer relationship and after a large number of calls and hard work trying to get hold of someone (they were very pleasant and understanding on the phone) but have now offered to contribute 20% of the costs (£3600) as a gesture of good will. I don't have a spare £14k to spend on fixing my car! My kids wont get anywhere near the things i would have liked to have provided them with this year, like a holiday etc, if I have to spend this much to get a car back on the road. I can't afford to just throw £18-20k value of car away. JLR have also said that I must decide before the end of the month if I want to get the work carried out! I have seen that there is a court case in the states regarding this engine (in disco's too I think?) I have also seen that a fair number of people have had this problem. I know that the car is now 6 years old and with nearly 90k on the clock, I do expect motoring bills, but this is beyond a joke.

Can anyone give me additional help with this?

I even bought a diecast model, jaguar jumper and laptop case! I was all in with JLR. Have lost complete faith in them. My 3 series had 240k on the clock, my audio 193k. I can go on.....

Thanks in advance.

All Jag dealer services, on time and all additional work carried out at Jag dealers, except tyre changes.

Really sorry to hear.

I think I would be looking at a replacement engine from a non-JLR source which I suspect will cost a fraction of what you have been quoted.

Just google F Pace replacement engine, there are plenty offering free quotes.

Good luck

Coincidentally, my F Pace has just suffered the same catastrophic engine failure requiring a new engine. It’s a 2017 model with 55,000 miles since new. It had never missed a beat and there was no warning whatsoever when it happened. Was wondering if you eventually got any compensation from Jaguar ?

Same sad tale with my 2018 s.0ltr (240) with only 60K miles and Jag FSH.  Any news on JLR contribution for replacement pls?

My 2020 E-pace went last night. Turbo and engine with only 37,000 miles on the clock and last serviced in Feb 2024!

Going back to dealer tomorrow. Just out of warranty - let the fight begin.

How very disappointing - good luck with the dealer.  JLR main dealer is it?  Had my F-pace engine and turbos replaced by SSG Prestige in Thurnscoe nr Barnsley (5*).

Yes it’s a !Removed! Lovett dealer, where I purchased it from.

Did your dealer manage to get 100% of the fees agreed ? We’ve been told 60/80% only on what could be £20,000.

I'm honestly left for words! Never would you expect a car with such low mileage blow up (pretty much)

Hi. My bill was £17k and i had to pay 100%. JLR no help whatsoever. 55k miles on the clock, fsh and just out of warranty. That's why I went to SSG Prestige for the repair/replacement.

OMG 😦 this is not acceptable- did you not want to take them to court?

My car is only 3 1/2 years old. £40k+ at purchase and only 37,000 miles - both services at there dealership and both on time 😬 and like you, just out of warranty.

We have had some informal insight from a JLR specialist (a friend from our village) that this is a well known & common fault with this particular engine (they’ve had ten in already this year).

We will definitely take it to court - it’s not acceptable.

I'm so sorry for what you have been through.

Yep considering it.  JLR are v familiar with all the engine issues across their range and worldwide.  Agree that they should pay 100% to fix all the affected motors.....suspect that would be financial suicide though.  Go for max you can get of course.  Can you update yr warranty provision?

SSG Prestige only 'do' JLR engine/turbo replacements - that is their entire business and they are super busy!! Mine fixed Mar24 and running beautifully + JLR warranty and 2yrs unltd mileage.

Good luck

Yep, fully understand and agree your sentiments/frustration/annoyance.

Mine blew up on the motorway at 70mph just b4 Xmas 23.  After messing around with JLR BS I took a long hard look at Repair/Get-Rid options and costs.  Plus, after this awful failure I had to decide whether I was still 'in love' with the vehicle and if not, how would I get back to feeling good about F-pace ownership.  2 months thinking time.  For the get-rid option was offered 10k by JLR (mine cost 34K in 2022) for the vehicle in broken-down condition.

Decided (60/40) wanted the car, had zero confidence in JLR, had to avoid throwing good money after bad etc.  Looked deep into suitable repair garages etc, hence SSG Prestige.  All dbl super duper after that decision and repair = feeling good about all.  However, I am down 17K.

On another Jag owners site there is some class action stuff going on, USA generated (I believe) where JLR rep has sunk so low that new vehicle warranty has been increased to 5 years  + free servicing.  I have joined that action for (some) recompense of replacement motor + turbos costs.  I wish JLR Europe had that.

My experience with JLR was/is that they provide all possible help short of any actual assistance.  Such and awfully frustrating/time wasting experience.  I decided that life was too short to continue beating my head against their brick walls so took the self-funded repair route, promised myself to avoid JLR in future where/when possible (for servicing, future repairs etc) and started 'fighting' them as part of a wider (more powerful) lobby group.

Your 80% JLR repair cost offset sounds considerably better than many, many others.  If you can get a written commitment to that figure (pref 100%) then I'd go for it.  But because JLR are basically a-holes I expect the harder you push the lower the offer will become.  Each to his own and good luck.

Thank you and I feel the same with regards to the car. A car I fell in love with, purchased without ever seeing it let alone sitting in one (during covid) Jaguar didn’t have the colour I wanted anywhere down south so had this one shipped to me. Sounds like a love story 😂  but I really have enjoyed and loved it. Now, umm… how can I trust a car that blows up? If they replace the engine with the same !Removed! engine, who’s to say it won’t do it again and next time I could have my son on the car and my husband over seas (he spends 80% of his time away with work).
Loosing faith in a car is when it’s time to get rid of it, however on the flip, you’d like to think lightening won’t strike twice?

For now I just want it off the drive (thankfully it will be back at !Removed! Lovett (tomorrow afternoon). It won’t be looked at for 2-3 weeks which is fine as we are away for a month come Thursday, so I’ll be picking up the drama when I get home. !Removed! Lovett will email me with the diagnostics when done.

Let’s just keep everything crossed that what !Removed! Lovett have said, will be what’s offered or better 🤞

With regards to the American action taking place, this is great and I’ll also go look as they need to be held accountable and England need to follow suit!

I glad you sorted your car out but gutted that it cost you so much money 😬😢 JLR shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this!

I bought a Dec 2020  2.0D F Pace from Marshalls Ipxswich in April, with 39,500 miles on the clock.  Since then the turbo has "blown"  and been replaced twice and is now back with them again as it has happened for a third time. !

It's on warranty but I have lost confidence in it.

I have only done 2000  miles in that time. The mechanic is saying he does not know what is causing the problem and they are getting a specialist  Jaquar engineer to look at it.

They are also saying it is very unusual for a turbo to blow.....but I am wondering if it is.?  Does anyone have  a similar experience

Unhappy Me
