X type 2.5 v6 auto estate. Had an intermittent whine from the drive train somewhere for a couple of years (5000 miles). For the past 2 MOTs I've asked the MOT tester to specifically check the front wheel bearings and drive shafts as it seemed to be coming from the front (passenger's footwell) but there was no wear to be causing  the intermittent whine. Decided to get the back axle and transfer box checked for an Oil problem about a month ago.

Got a call back an hour later saying when they drained the transfer box (as much as they could) there were little bits of metal in the Oil. Anyway, they changed the Oil and then ran the car in drive with the wheels off the ground and it is definitely the transfer box making the whining noise. Car still drives fine with no clunks or rattles from the drive but now I know the noise is from the TB I don't want to try it on long journeys.

It's only done 67,000 miles, is a great driver in great condition  with all the electrics working including the sat nav, air con and cruise control and has rust free sills and v good paint work, so I don't want to scrap it.

Has anyone had their TB replaced and can they recommend a garage or specialist? And how much did it cost??

I've had a few 2.5 AWD estates.  Never done more than the 67k before the TFB gave issues.

£500 for refurbishment and that again for removal/re-fitting.  The Mk.1 had a better system but Ford economics went for a cheaper option on the Mk.2.  Apparently the bearings in the Mk.2 box need to be beefier.

Picked a replacement up on eBay with warranty and history that had only covered 40k for £180 and got it fitted by my local indy who I always use for £ 150. You can fit the earlier ones with the viscous coupling to later models, which is what I did as they tend to give better AWD experience  Mine is 2005 3.0 sovereign manual saloon and the box was from a little used 2001.
