Sometimes when I try to start it is absolutely dead no ignition, no lights, radio needs re coding but it comes back to life when I "fiddle" with bits near the battery, does anyone have any idea what might be the cause please.

Clean all the battery connectors and contacts, and the cable and its connection to the bodywork.
