Hi,

Got the message a couple of days ago so charged the battery with a Ctek charger and it fully charged the battery over 24 hours. Tried the car again and the message didn’t clear.

I connected a multimeter across the battery terminals and it read just over 12v, started the car and it dropped to 10.98 and then when back to just over 12v. As the load increased by switching on lights, heated windows, heater etc.. it dropped to 11v and occasionally into the late 10’s. Turning lights etc.. off and it went back to just over 12v.

At no point did the volts rise into 13v or 14v so does this indicate that the alternator is no longer working?

I was just going to replace the battery but having tested the volts I’m thinking it’s the alternator.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I thought it would end up being the more expensive option.

The garage is about 11 miles away, do you think it would make it there before the battery dies?

With a fully charged battery and everything switched off, it might make it. Personally, I wouldn’t risk it.

Charge up the battery and it will do 11 miles no problem

I had the exact same problem about 2 weeks ago leaving my work car park and it managed 30 miles

I had everything electrical off that I didn’t need, but the windows misted bad and I was freezing by the time I got home!

Second hand alternator cured it

I once did nearly 300km in darkest Mozambique in a Disco TD5  with no effective alternator. Just make sure no lights, climate control etc for the journey. Maybe best to lower one window a little to avoid the misting issues that Vic had.

I took it to Jagman in Wigan yesterday which is 11 miles away and I got there with no problems. I’ve left it there and they will have a look at it for me. Hopefully they can fix it before Christmas as I’m supposed to be off to Edinburgh on Boxing Day.

Had the alternator replaced and got about 4 miles away from the garage and the battery not charging message came on again.

It was showing 13.48v with the engine running so it was charging but still not right.

Took it back to the garage and they replaced the alternator again.

11 miles home with lights, air con radio all on and now seems to be ok.

Battery now show about 14.8v with the engine running and finally no warning message.

Got the battery on charge now to ensure it’s fully charged before I’m off to Edinburgh on Boxing Day.

Thanks to Jagman in Wigan for sorting it out at short notice when they were already busy.

Letter fact it’s January 8 and last night on the way home on the highway I got a iMessage battery not charging but my belt was making noises I come out this morning and it’s squealing the belt but I didn’t get no warnings about the battery so it’s definitely the serpentine belt you gotta check that And you gotta check the pulley s. and I got a 2012 XS portfolio would only it just turned to 47,000 miles and I’m looking to sell it actually I can’t afford it right now I’m on disability but I love this car it’s not like any other car I’ve ever had and I’ve had Mercedes Cadillacs Lincoln everything. So I just ordered a belt from Amazon and got rush shipping. It cost me $25 OEM belt but you can’t even see it. The engine are so compacted you gotta take the whole front where the radiator is the top part all that stuff off before you can even get to it , I guess if you had it on a lift it might be a little easier but it’s a pain in the !Removed! to work on these cars but you gotta check the bill around 40 50,000 miles. You should replace it but check your pulleys that they’re not wobbling spray some water I wanted the pulleys and the belt stop squeaking. It’s most likely the belt but you gotta check and make sure they lined up right there’s no play it’s not too loose  but good luck I live in Connecticut so anybody wants to buy a beautiful Jaguar like it’s brand new email at john_mele@iCloud.com. I love this car but I can’t afford it. It’s so beautiful like it rolled out of the showroom. Thank you.
