Speedhumps

Something has to be done about traffic humps? Has anyone had any problems with their tyres or suspension?

Some of these are really dangerous or annoying for homeowners living near one. I used to live near a speed hump and got fed up with hearing cars going over these and cars undersides being scraped. The whole neighbourhood is plagued with the bloody things!

I absolutely agree, and there are millions of people and spine injuries as well as damage suspensions on their vehicles. Lots of bus drivers complain of problems with their spines over the years. It's certainly not saving any fuel for the environment because everybody changes down gear as they approach speed bumps because they are either going to damage your suspension or their tyres.

I did read somewhere that one MP had cleared all the speed bumps out of his city, they are a useless and expensive commodity

In Derby they removed them. I wish others would follow suit.

Just a short note about speed humps,why were they invented?Yes indeed to slow down traffic,e.g.boy racers doing 80 mph in a housing estate.I recently damaged my jag at 10 mph.because the hump was too high.If a boy racer hit the same hump at 80mph,he would be killed,or maybe loose control and plough into a few pedersrians.Surely there should be a legal height to such humps,just high enough to slow down traffic,i.e.give you a fright,not a shock.Boy racers are not all bad,they love their cars,the same cars usually have limited ground clearance,so even a small hump will slow them down,why have 8 inch speed humps,just imagine a pensioner in a electric wheelchair doing 2 m.p.h.hitting a 8 inch hump,yes the wheelchair would turn over,I come over the speed hump next doing 10 mph and run over the pensioner,I get out of the car to help,and a boy racer hits the hump at 80 and kills us all! I rest my case

:) :) :) Made me smile but I see a slight flaw in your synopsis - the pensioner is driving on the pavement and thereby misses the speed hump -_-

I believe that speed humps all over the country should be removed, a lot of them are damaged, causing drivers to go from 20/30 mph down to a snails pace, just to protect your car from damage, the local councils should keep them in good condition, lorries and 4 x4's just drive over these without slowing down, so they actually are a waste, speed humps is probably a factor for people buying 4 x 4's

I wonder if anyone has ever thought of questioning the legality of these humps. Could it not be argued that they are specifically designed to damage vehicles that are being legally driven? If this could be maintained then it would follow that councils refusing to remove them, in addition to being liable at civil law for any damage to vehicles being driven within the speed limit, would also be guilty of criminal damage. What does anybody think?

I've always thought them stupid, I always catch my mudflaps on them. We just had some that must be near the height of a curbs installed not far from my house.

On the slight plus side, those fools who "Slam" their cars often get beached on them. Can make for an interesting 20 minutes watching how they try and get them off again! ^_^

Big 4x4s just fly over them... I had a toyota surf once that just glided over them, hardly felt a thing

Never have any problems with mine, although I do wonder sometimes whether they're causing serious damage over time to a cars suspension.

I've been a bus driver for 3yrs most of our routes have speed bumps ! At the minute I'm off sick due to spinal problems, One thing that always gets me people park vehicles half on footpath rite next to a speed bump don't put them on thier drives ! In x-type if u get it rite on some u can get wheels each side and u can't feel them, but when there's a car there it's like trying to drive over a footpath that's not dropped ! Waste of time and money and expensive for us drivers!!

Mistaken mr moderator. With so many cars parked on the pavements the pensioner has to ride in the road!
