egr valve

Im sure I have seen this on here before but search won't allow 3 letter words.

I am getting embarased by the amount of black smoke being thrown out, and believe I may need to clear the valve. There is also an occasional hestitancy when cruising.

I have changed the air filter but that has had little benefit.

Can anyone tell me where this valve is, how hard is it to clean and if I need anything in the way of gaskets etc. It is a 2.0d, with 75k.

check the intake manifold inlet hose i had a split in mine like u i had loads of black smoke now mine is sorted

I did find the problem to be a split in the pipe, just used some duct tape on it for now, but the smoke has cleared. Forgot to put the small vacuum tube back on, so the engine light came on, code reader off eBay for £13 and fixed that too.

it takes about an hour and you could get roped into cleaning manifold above it !

But the valve is where you need start. http://www.jaguarfor...oday-10290.html Do not use naked screw driver (Use engine cleaner or spray cleaner, with plastic knife and toothbrush and plenty of rags. Very mucky!! but does work.

EGR valves seem to be a huge topic of conversation. I changed mine on x type 2.2 diesel ( mondeo engine). The problem of glow plug light coming on under harsh acceleration was not fixed by this. Ended up taking her down to jag specialist, the first question they asked was where did I fill up. When I told them tesco they explained that supermarket fuels contain emulsifiers which contaminate your fuel system and can lead to a break up of the fuel pump. After a new filter , fuel line flush and a rather expensive additive problem solved. The moral is , put your car on a test rig before changing parts.

On the plus side I can change an EGR valve in 22 minutes.

Anyone want to buy a refurbished EGR valve? LOL

22 minutes is pretty fast. I don't get oily hands any more, though.

 

I would like to bet that the main dealers would take longer than 22 minutes   ---  or charge you for longer!

 

My engine amber light came on yesterday and I presumed it was the EGR valve, as it has done it before.  I gave it a good blast on the M42 and the next time I started the car the light had gone off..

Thanks peter, it may be worth taking it in to have the fault code checked out, mine came up contamination and if it is that you can end up with an expensive fuel pump replacement scenario. Luckily the egr valve on these cars is well situated at the front left as you are looking under the bonnet, it's also worth listening to hear if you have a loud sucking noise whilst the engine is ticking over as this would indicate a split hose

It happened exactly the same three weeks ago and I had it checked out my my mobile mechanise who I had used for 13 years.  It came up EGR valve.  I think there are two on the S Type and I haven't a clue as to where they are located.  There are no untoward sound from the engine which is running very sweetly.

 

Giving a bit of welly occasionally seems to keep the engine smooth.  I had not done any long runs for about three weeks, and that might have been not to its liking!

 

I will find the location of these valves in the next few days.

Where is the location for the EGR in a 2004 3.0  x type jag?

Hi Ismael, 

The EGR Valve [Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve] is a usually a valve in the Diesel engine, but I understand that more modern cars all have that piece of kit.

At a guess your car will not have an EGR valve.
