X Type Brakes

Hi

I'm new to Jaguar and have just bought my first, a 2.2 X Type SE estate, 2007. I'm really pleased apart form one rather worrying thing. The brake pedal feels really soft and sinks when brakes are applied. i mentioned that the brakes seemed soft on my test drive and was told that they would feel softer than my previous car, a Skoda Octavia Vrs. I was assured that this would be looked at before I took delivery and new rear pads were fitted. However after giving the new pads about 300 miles to bed in. the brakes remain disconcertingly soft. I'm taking it back tomorrow to be assessed. ( I bought from an established Main dealer) Are X Type brakes usually soft or should I be asking questions?

I have an 06 2.2 sport and the pedal is fine.

If the pedal actually goes softer after beeing pressed it is definately faulty.

It sounds to me like you have air in the system. A preassure bleed could help, if you could clamp the flexi pipes (if you can get to them) to three wheels and check each brake in turn, alternating the free wheel, it would be an easier fix that way.

Hello Fraser, soft pedal can be caused by -

Old brake fluid, the fluid should be changed every 1 to 2 years and should be super dot 4 (wrong fluid for abs not good), as fluid ages it collects moisture and air which affects pedal feel.

Damaged/worn brake hoses which expand when put under pressure causing soft pedal, rear hoses on X Type can rub on wheel rim and fuel pipe from filler to tank.

Simple way to check, sit in car and start engine, press pedal 2 or 3 times and it goes firm. Fluid is easy to flush through and change, hoses easy to change, front pads easy to change, rear pads are easy but you need a special tool to wind caliper back (lucky you've had these done)
