I love the S-Type, I have since Jaguar launched the car, but it's taken me quite a few years to take the leap and buy one. I've always been surprised that with the S-Types retro looks, that the car is generally supplied with a growler, I appreciate at the time of introduction a pedestrian safe Leaper was not available, so to my question/poll:

What should it be Leaper or Growler?

  1. Mr D - Leaper

This is just my opinion which may or may not be worth paying any attention too. Don,t bother as they are illegal in our Country, check it out, they were fitted to S Types for export. This debate has taken many hours of forum time on other forums. Should the law be interested in a fitted leaper is a very interesting point but thats not the problem if you are involved in an RTA and an insurance investigator inspects your damaged vehicle a leaper is not type approved and also needed to be notified as a modification and if you have failed to do so you have problems. Again in my opinion the leaper does not look right on the S Type, but not everybody,s opinion is not the same thank god.

I quite like the growler, but there is nothing like seeing the leaping cat on your bonnet from the drivers view

Leaper, soz but a Jag isn't a Jag without one.

In reply to an earlier Question, you can get one on eBay for £27.99 with £3.99 P&P' (spring loaded type), i have just ordered one for my S-Type :)

It has arrived today, and I have just finished fitting it, what an easy job, the growler pops out and the leaper fits straight into the same holes as the growler.

Oh and BTW, it looks superb, i will take some pics (when I am not working) and post them on here.

I am of the same opinion as MacSTR on all his points, the leaper is not legal in this country for Health & Safety reasons so I am led to believe and as he says problems could be encountered insurancewise if injury to a third party resulted from an accident if the vehicle involved carried a leaper on the bonnet. As regards the look of the car, why "Gild the lily?" The S type looks perfect in my opinion without the leaper, in fact the leaper looks to me to be what it is on the S type, something put on as an afterthought. The leaper on the Mk.2's and S types of the late 50's and 60's looked right, and if my memory serves me correctly was larger, more in proportion to the car, but that was part of the Jaguar design and hence as I said looked right. As MacSTR said this is just my feeling on the subject and everyone is entitled to their views.

saw a Mk 2 today, and yes the leaper is larger, the one I have fitted is 5 inches long, the original is 8 inches, I purchased the 8 inch one with hopes of fitting it, but omg, it looks huge on the bonnet so I changed my mind and keep it as an ornament.....however, on the Mk 2 it looks superb!
