Can anyone please tell me how to remove the old tatty gear nob from my 2000 S Type. Its manual not automatic, some people say to push it down because there is a spring clip but others say just unscrew it. I have tried both and only resulted in making it look even more tatty.. Thanks.. Greg

Hi Gregory,

I can't say with certainty regarding the S-Type, but on my previous car (a Pug - don't say it....) it was a screw type. My point in replying, if your manual S-Type is a screw type, more than likely, like my old Pug, during assembly they will use a load of lock-tight to ensure the knob doesn't come lose/off by accident. I was amazed at the amount of force needed to remove it.

Good luck,

Dave

Cheers Dave, I think that I am going to have to destroy it to get it off as its just falling apart with the amount of force needed to remove it, unfortunately I am having to buy a universal replacement for now untill I can find an original one at a sensible price. The Quote from Jaguar for a gear knob is £143.00 +vat which seems alittle excessive as the price of one for an auto is only £30.00

Wow! £143.00 (+vat) is very expensive. Have you tried ebay or a breakers?

I put the feelers out a couple of weeks ago, if there were any members who dealt in spare parts and while the post has had lots of views there have been no replies whatsoever. The last online club I was in (406 Coupe Club) was a lot more active and had one member who routinely sourced parts for coupes, often breaking older, non-roadworthy coupes. Most of his clientele were from the club so it was a win win situation all round.

Happy hunting,

Dave

Finally got the bugger off, not an easy job but if anyone is in the same situation this is how I did it (I am not saying this is the correct method, but its the only way I could do it)... First of all you have to cut off the leather around the top and remove that, then remove the foam rubber cushioning. Next you have a metal knob which just pulls off, then you have a hard plastic collar which needs to be sawn off. Then you are done and ready to replace with your new one... Its a time consuming fiddly job, but it now looks miles better..
