o2 Sensor - Engine Malfunction Light Diagnosis & Cost

Hi My low millage (2003) x-type recently had a 'engine malfunction light' come on. This was after digging it out of snow from a Heathrow Car park where it sat for 3 weeks. I (hoped) thought it might re-set after a few runs (I heard they can). But it stayed on. I took it to Jag for Diagnosis (expensive) and was told it was the: UPSTREAM O2 Sensor Bank 1 (its a petrol V6). They wanted (Stratstone) £450 to replace it - seems rather expensive for a filter....Any comments from the Club Experts? Also any good Independent Garages in Hertfordshire?

I had exactly the same thing, it did go away after a few days but returned a week later. No symptoms as such (mine's a late 2001 x-type 2.5 V6).

I took it to a local garage (independent) and they code read it, found it was the o2 sensor and had it fixed the same day, just over £80 for the part and 1 hour labour + vat totalled around £160 I think all in. Hope this helps.

Does the light affect the car performance ? And does it show any messages on your display screen ?

2.5 v6 sport, jaguar racing green

Hi slightly veering off the subject but I got fed up off jaguar charging a shed load just to plug mine in if I had an issue. My friend suggested looking on eBay for a diagnostic scanner so I could plug it in myself. For about £40-45 you will get a pretty sensible one that will tell you any issues you have or any pending issues. It will also reset the codes and engine management light etc. one of the moves I made buying one of them them as gives you some knowledge before you go to a garage of the issue you have. Plus the part you are looking for is about £65 on eBay brand new from a motor supplier. Hope you get it soughted easy enough.

hi all

had car 3 weeks same problem , dealer reset light but it re-appeared , surprise,surprise my 3 month warrenty does not cover this, so is it something i can buy and replace myself ,very limited know how but can follow a book if you know what i mean,also he said sometimes they just need a clean, any ideas on doing this

Latest: I also have expired warranty, but I also have MOT warranty still valid. So, I am having it MOT'd (hopefully it will fail) and then repair will be done under Jaguar MOT Warranty. The diagnosis cost £75 so I might just get one of those readers TopBoy.

i,ve been doing some resaerch on line , sensor might not need replaceing , have found a product which cleans cat and sensors,its called CATACLEAN, read some very good reports on this , so i,m having a tenners worth and see what happens ,also going to buy code reader to reset light .

I just recently had to take mine to jag for a scan before I decided to by one as my abs light came on. They said it was my near side rear abs sensor was broken and the off side was on the way out. I took it to my mechanic and he replaced both the sensors. The light remained on. Reset the light with the scanner and as I drove down the road it came back on. I drove straight to jag and told them I replaced everything on the report they had given me and the light remained. They plugged it back in for free this time and now tell me the fault is being caused by the original near side rear sensor but this time the abs module or faulty wiring. I just got back from holiday today and have left my car with my mechanic. I'm going to collect it in the morning hoping the issue is now resolved. But it goes to show you pay all that money for jaguar to full scan to find the issue and they can still mess it up. It's driving me mad at the moment.

@ Steve 341 after still currently tryi g to get to the bottom of the same issue it could be a sensor, one of the reluctor rings ( the sensor reads the grooves off this ring. Not an expensive part ) or faulty wiring or module.

just to say catclean will only work if the sensor is dirty not if its not working or the heater  part of it is the fault it's easier in the long run to replace with a new part because if its dirty the engine isn't fueling correct or is burning Oil etc...if its not fueling correct most of the time its the o2 sensor ...

if after clearing the abs light you  don't move the car (start her up though) and the light comes on its wiring,abs unit or the new sensor is faulty... if it comes on only when driving its the ring or in the case of some cars the whole bearing that is needing to be changed

can someone help please, im told exhaust sensor needs changing, no warning light ect just when cold stutters  a tad under load

until warm then perfect.

which sensor should i change its x type 2.0 v6,  one at back or front , one at back im told has heater , should i try this one 1st.

anyone bought aftrer market lambda sensors off e bay seem so much cheaper and marry up to the dealer part numbers ?
