Hi I'm a new member having just purchased my first jag and was wondering if anyone could help with a slight (I hope) problem . Car is 3.0 v6 auto 2000 model and has covered 63,000 miles . The problem I have is that when driving steadily around 40 mph it can feel slightly jerky like a misfire but its not misfiring and put your foot down and it goes like stink ?! I'm sort of feeling its a gearbox problem a bit like its stuck between 4th&5th or something like that ! Is this anything anyone has come across before or could shed some light on at all ?

Only history up to 47,000 its done 68,000 ! I'm planning on giving it a full service some time this week . Is the gearbox Oil easy to change ? Only thing is like I said its not misfiring as far as I can tell at any other point apart from this little twitch at about 40/45 mph

Thanks for your reply I will let you know when I've serviced it and if its made any difference

Hi Frank, it could possibly be that your gearbox Oil does need changing, if there are little bits of debris floating about in it there is a chance it is causing a solenoid to stick, hence your problem and if left will probably at some stage cause a complete gearbox failure, an Oil change therefore may be a good option. I am not saying that this is the case but after 60,000 odd thousand miles it certainly will not hurt. It should make your car drive smoother anyway and if the problem was dirty or degraded Oil will cure it completely. The cost of a gearbox oil change is around £120+VAT including filter and gasket, you can attempt it yourself but you need the correct equipment and facilities to do it so perhaps it is better to get the job done professionally, at a good independant if you know of one. Even if the oil is not the problem it will be money well spent as it will more or less guarantee the box for another 60,000 miles at least. My 2002 S-Type has done 63,000 miles and despite the fact that the gearbox is as smooth as silk through the changes I will be getting the oil changed within the next few months. Hope this helps. Best wishes Geoff.

As an advocate of changing auto gearbox Oil at 60k , (in any make of car) agree with Isis that you have little to lose. Question, does your cruise control happily engage?

I had the same problem with my auto gearbox it ended up having 2 boxes (1 second hand and 1 recon) fitted, it eventually turned out to be the torque converter that was at fault, Thankfully it was under warranty at the time...Hope the Oil change curers the fault, my car had done 105000 with a full Jaguar service history with one owner from new can,t help wondering if that,s why he changed it? they are not cheap to replace
