Anyone help? Bought my 2nd hand XF S last week and found there is only one remote key.  Somenone has offered me a spare complete one. 2 questions if anyone knows the answers a) I can get a new metal insert made for the old one as a standby - where is the code number?  b) what do I have to do with another remote to get it to work - get it recoded? what about the metal insert part - get it cut to the old one or can I use it anyway???

I can't really help on the specifics of your questions but if it helps I also inherited only one key with my used XF in January this year. I was quoted £235 for a spare which I didn't take up until the original key stopped working. I then purchased a new one from an independent Jag specialist which cost £160 for the remote key assembly plus £20 to programme plus VAT (£216 in total)

Having read a recent Telegraph Motoring article on the price of car keys for other makes, the Jag key price wasn't too outrageous as a VW Polo was quoted as being over £700 and many other cheaper non-exec cars were pricier than the XF.

That sounds as if the company you bought the replacement from can re-programme any remote? can you give me their name/contact and I will speak to them. Thanks for your help. you can e mail me direct if you wish - rtmck@hotmail.co.uk

I bought a "new" FOB off e bay for £35. Bought a new key from e bay - cut to suit from a photo for £14.95. the had my local jag centre (not a delaer) reprogrammed it when doing a 42,000 service - never charged me apart from the two new fob batteries

I have a jaguar XF 2009 model. Both my keys were stolen, and the car is locked. Any recommendations where to get cheap keys and fob cut and reprogrammed.

2. Do I need still need 2 keys for the car to get it back on the road.

Thank you for all your help.

Hi Ishmael, and welcome to the club.

I think "cheap" keys are not to be had when both keys are gone.

I think you should contact a main dealer and ask for advice, or call out the AA or RAC if you are a member  of either.

Having two keys is advisable, and they should be kept separately to ensure that there is always one available, which would have avoided your present circumstance.

The person that stole you keys could now be looking for the car, so keep it locked away in a safe place,

Regards,

Peter.

Thank you Pete. The is still locked and safe. I called the main dealer and the they qouted me £1600 for the keys as they said they need changing bits in the car as well. Is there a way I can get keys made without splashing this huge amount of money and have nothing change inside the car, maybe buying keys and fob from internet and get it cut and programmed for the car.

Hi Ishmael,

The only other option I can think of is an Auto Electrician.

There used to be one advertising in the Birmingham Area  ---  he was a Mobile Electrician.

It would be worth you going on to the internet to see if there is one around.

Let us know how you get on.

Peter.

hi

because you have no key, you cant just copy the old key

I dont think jaguar keeps keys patterns saved, so it would be new ignition, door and boot locks, then recode the keys and remotes

cheapest option is to get a second hand set of keys and locks, fit them and get some one out to reprogram them like tony dalton mobile jaguar mapping and coding

Thank you all. I have the AA coming to cut and code the key for a fraction of the cost that the main dealer had charged me and gave me 12 months guarantee. The keys will be ready this coming Friday, as Monday is a bank holiday. They need 4 working days to get the key from jaguar, it's been a tough time to make this happen. I will keep you posted on how I get on.

Hi All

Just a quick update to the key cutting, if you own a 2016 on Xf (x260), the key programing is a big issue.

In 2016 Jaguar Changed the process to help make it more difficult to steal there cars , in order to reprograme a key or keys you have to have the KVM module reprogramed berfore you can programe the keys.

The dealers will do this by suppling a new KVM module and 2x keys for the sum of £690.00.

There are only a couple of companys in the country that will reprogram the module and supply 2 x keys, it cost me £ 180 pounds and a three hundred mile round trip.

But much cheaper than a Jaguar sort !!!!

So be aware later X20 no easy key fix.

I would like to know the outcome of this.  I think that without any working key for your car to be cloned then no-one could issue you new key(s) except for Jaguar themselves, possibly some clever person has worked around this but I imagine this will cost you a packet at JLR.  It cost me 170 quid to have a firm repair and clone one key from a working one, and that's after buying a blank which I found only one local key smith who had the kit to match and cut the blank to match the working key I had.

Always have 2 keys bud, one day it could save you all sorts of grief.

Got 1 key programmed for £400 from independent key programmer. Jaguar dealership wanted £1600 + VAT to get 2 keys cut and programmed. They also wanted to change the ECU.
