Tom Tom SatNav Problems

I have just bought a new XF Sportbrake and opted not to have the built in SatNav as it did not give speed camera warnings. However I now find that my new TomTom Go Live 1005 keeps losing the GPS signals and freezing which is may be caused by the Thermic windscreen. Any advice on how to overcome this problem?

you could try using an external aerial, made specifically for the type of windscreen you have.

Thanks Trevor but unfortunately Halfords advised me that  the latest Tom Toms (mine is a 1005) do not have an input slot for an external aerial.

I am awaiting a response from Jaguar Technical department as the built in Sat Nav must receive a satisfactory signal

I have added the speed camera database to the XF car sat nav system and set an audible alert for each camera type.  This works quite well, although it doesn't audibly warn you until you are almost at the camera site, but it does at least show the different camera types on the map.  I got the database via Pocket GPS World.  The only mod I had to make was to split the mobile camera file into two as there are now over 9000 mobile camera sites in the UK and a file with this many POIs was too big for the system.  There are different files for each camera type, each of which shows with a different (supplied) icon.

 

Admittedly this does not help with your thermic windscreen issue but it does provide an alternative for those with the built-in sat nav.

The instructions for loading the camera POI information that I followed are here:

The same approach could be used for loading other POI files.  The download I used contains two files for each POI type, e.g.

 

pocketgps_uk_gatso.gpx

pocketgps_uk_gatso.bmp

 

The gpx file contains the coordinate information and the bmp file is a 22x22 pixel bitmap to be shown on the screen (example image attached)

I updated the files today and there was no need to split the mobile camera file.  In fact there are only 7K entries in this file so I am not sure why I had problems last time around.   All imported and sound "2" chosen for them :) 

 

The files are actually updated weekly but I choose to apply them on a monthly basis.

I also have an XF Sportbrake and also bought a TOMTOM 1005 live,had lots of problems with it ,ie no signal, losing signal, image of car on sat nav was not on the road, after contacting TomTom and doing an update it was still useless , so contacted Tomtom again and they told me to send it back they sent me a prepaid postage label ,said it would take up to 3weeks, after 2weeks I received it back and there have been no further problems with it at all, hope this helps

Further to your very helpful response I contacted TomTom but they denied all knowledge about how they could cure the problem so I would appreciate any further information such as contact details etc at TomTom.

The only suggestion from TomTom was for me to contact Jaguar to establish if there was a gap in the athermic windscreen through which the TomTom could receive the GPS signal.

Jaguar were similarly unhelpful but explained that the reason the Jaguar built in SatNav did not have safety camera information was because it was illegal in certain countries where they market the XF. This obviously does not concern Mazda as my daughter's Mazda 6 bulit in SatNav(TomTom) does include safety cameras. They also suggested that the heated front windscreen could create a "Faraday Cage" which would prevent the GPS signal but again this problem does not occur on the Ford Mondeo heated front windscreen so I believe that was a bit of a red herring.

I did ask Jaguar why they did not provide a socket so that the TomTom could receive the GPS signal viaa the "shark fin" which is the route for the GPS signal for the built in SatNav but got no response.

Any further helpful input would be much appreciated

Tedlaw: sorry I have nothing to help but did try my tomtom start60 for the 1st time the other day and out of around 20 mins, it managed to get reception for about 30secs. Yes, I have the heated screen which I immediately assumed was the cause, I also have the Jag nav but prefer the tomtom.

So given I am stuck with the jagnav (I must admit though, the more I familiarise myself with the many, largely undocumented options, it gets a little better), I will probably get the speed cams for it. So, thanks ChrisC. I know you went a little off-topic from what Tedlaw is trying to fix (I hate it when my threads get hi-jacked), but your info/experience is relevant and will help me.

Since I found that the tomtom no getty the bongo signals, I have (foolishly maybe at £171) ordered the map update from navigation.com, so I guess I will try and update that before I mess with it with the speed cams.

n.b. sounds like both tomtom and jag replies are a bit of a crock e.g. no speed cams in jagnav cos its illegal in some countries, bah, the driver is responsible as is obvious from all the other navs having them.

Apologies for visiting an old thread, but I would appreciate information if there was any solution found to this.

I purchased the Tomtom dash mount beanbag for my Go 6000, and might be lucky if the device picks up a signal for 1% of the journey.

Got no help from Jaguar Technical Dept or Dealer(Guy Salmon)

Solution was to put TomTom device on a suction disc at bottom right hand corner of windscreen. it works fine there but cable has to go behind steering wheel

Try mounting it on the ash tray / coin lid my works fine there! If so? Open the lid and find a way to support it above the 12v power point. (I made a pedestal using the SatNav plug  as a base or you could see if the suction mount will stick to the underside of the open lid) Only reason I have one as a back up Jaguar's SatNav doesn't always recognise post codes.

Care needs to be taken if adding speed/safety camera to SatNav's warnings if intend to travel in France that you can remove it! Cops favourite sport there is waiting for UK cars using SatNav's and handing out fines if they find any data base disabled or not  containing speed camera locations.
